Ross, Lee Win Pac-12 Honors as UCLA Places Third
March 18, 2017 | Gymnastics
UCLA's Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Kyla Ross were voted the Pac-12's Specialist and Freshmen of the Year, respectively, in a vote by conference coaches.
Lee, a redshirt senior from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, earns UCLA's first-ever Pac-12 Specialist of the Year award since it was established in 2013. Lee ranks No. 2 in the nation on uneven bars and No. 11 on balance beam. She has scored two perfect 10s on bars this year and had one meet in which she scored 9.975 on both bars and beam. The AAI Award nominee has posted seven scores of 9.95 or higher and 14 scores of 9.9 or higher, which both rank second-most on the team despite competing just two events. She earned Pac-12 Specialist of the Week honors three times this year, the most of any gymnast this season.
Ross, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist from Aliso Viejo, Calif., is UCLA's first Freshman of the Year since 2011 and the Bruins' eighth ever. She has consistently provided big scores for the Bruins this season, leading the team with four perfect 10s, two each on bars and beam. She leads the team with 10 scores of 9.95 or higher and 17 scores of 9.9 or higher and has the most individual victories on the team with 15, although she has competed mainly on three events. Ross ranks No. 1 in the nation on uneven bars No. 10 on beam and No. 16 on vault and won the Pac-12 title with the first-ever perfect 10 on beam at the Championship meet.
UCLA tied for third with Washington at the Pac-12 Championship, which was won by Utah. The Bruins had a rough start to the meet, falling behind in the first rotation after an average showing on vault and struggling on uneven bars, an event on which they rank second in the nation. UCLA turned it around in the final two rotations, scoring a season-high 49.575 on balance beam and then turning in three scores of 9.9 on higher on floor exercise to close the meet. Ross scored her second perfect 10 of the year on beam, and Katelyn Ohashi added a 9.95, with one perfect score shown among the four judges.
