GULF SHORES, Ala.ย -- No. 2 UCLA (30-6) got off to another slow start, dropping three first sets and couldn't overcome a hot No. 4 Florida State (29-8), falling in an elimination match, 3-1, at the 2017 NCAA Championships on Gulf Beach on Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins' junior Elise Zappia and freshman Torrey Van Windenย gave UCLA a 1-0 lead with a dominant performance on court three over FSU's Sierra Sanchez and Jerger Macy, 21-13, 21-14.
Katie Horton and Francesca Goncalvesย tied the dual at 1-1 for FSU with a tightly-contested win on court four overย UCLA'sย senior Jordan Anderson and sophomoreย Izzyย Carey in straight sets, 21-18, 21-18.
The Seminoles then took a 2-1 lead after Vanessa Freireย and Victoria Paranaguaย defeated UCLA's senior Kamila Tan and freshman Madi Yeomans in three sets, 21-18, 16-21, 15-10.
The deciding court was court one as Leigh Andrews and Brooke Kuhlmanย won a tightly-contested three-set match over UCLA's sophomore duo of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara, 21-19, 16-21, 17-15.
The match on court five was truncated but the Bruins' freshman pair of Savvy Simo and Lily Justine was leading the Seminoles' Hailey Luke and Eva Torruella, 22-20, 19-21, 13-8.
The loss ends UCLA's best season to date as the Bruins won a school-record 30 duals compared to just six defeats. During the season, UCLA also posted a school-record 24 straight dual victories. The Bruins also got their first win over No. 1 USC in program history in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Championship, snapping the Trojans' 62-dual winning streak. The Future looks bright for UCLA as this year's team was comprised of 50 percent freshmen in the starting lineup (5-of-10 starters). UCLA will say goodbye to two seniors, Jordan Anderson and the program's first-ever beach-only player, Kamilaย Tan.
