
#3 Bruins Run Rule #21 Minnesota, Defeat USD

SAN DIEGO -ย The third-ranked Bruins ran their record to 18-0 on Saturday, posting a 12-4, six-inning victory over #21 Minnesota and an 8-3 win against San Diego in a unique doubleheader which saw them play back-to-back games in two different stadiums.
In game one against Minnesota (11-7), played at the SDSU Softball Stadium, UCLA tallied 15 hits from eight different players, as junior Taylor Pack, redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan and freshman Briana Perez each had three hits, while senior Kylee Perez added two. In the circle, redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia (7-0) struck out four in five innings, giving up two runs, four hits and one walk. She recorded 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth, striking out a pair in the first and second frames. Freshman Holly Azevedo tossed the last inning, allowing two runs and two hits.
The Bruins scored a pair of runs in both the first and second innings. In the first, Jordan singled to left and junior Brianna Tautalafua launched her fifth home run of the season to left. An inning later, junior Zoe Shaw reached on a one-out single to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when junior Paige Halstead reached on an error, with Halsteadย advancing to third on the play. One out later, Briana Perez reached on a bunt single and Kylee Perez singled to left to bring in Halstead to make it 4-0.
UCLA tacked on three more in the third. With one out, freshman Kinsley Washington singled to short and moved to third on a Briana Perez single to right. After Briana swiped second, Kylee Perez singled to right to score both runners to increase the lead to 6-0. As Kylee moved to third on an error, she would score on a single to left by Jordan to make it 7-0.
The Golden Gophers netted two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Katelyn Kemetmuellerย and an RBI single by MaKenna Partain, but the Bruins got both of those runs back in their at-bat. Pack singled up the middle to open the frame and Shaw walked, with both moving up a base on a Halstead sacrifice. One out later, Briana Perez doubled to left-center to drive in a pair and make it 9-2.
Minnesota added two more in the sixth on an RBI triple by Maddie Houlihan, who would also score on a wild pitch, but the Bruins invoked the mercy rule for the eighth time this season with three in their half of the sixth. Jordan doubled to lead off the inning and Tautalafua reached on an error, with junior Jenna Crawford coming in to run and stealing second. Sophomore Bubba Nickles followed with a single to right-center to bring in Jordan to make it 10-4. A Pack single to left-center plated Crawford to make it a seven-run game, while one out later, Nickles came home on a wild pitch to give the Bruins a 12-4 victory.
Following a 10-mile bus trip to the USD Softball Complex and a brief warmup period, the Bruins notched 12 hits from six different players against San Diego (10-10). Kylee Perez and Nickles both had three hits and Washington and freshman Julie Rodriguez each produced two. In the circle, senior Selina Ta'amilo (3-0) started and struck out three in four innings, allowing a run and six hits. Senior Johanna Grauer fanned four in 2 1/3 frames of relief, giving up two runs, two hits and four walks, while Azevedo came in to get the last two batters of the game.
UCLA batted around in the top of the second, scoring five times. Pack led off with a single to right, Nickles doubled to left and both came home on a single up the middle from freshman Malia Quarles. Later in the inning, with the bases full and one out, Kylee Perez singled to left to bring in Shaw to make it 3-0. Jordan followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Washington to up the lead to 4-0. Then with the Perez sisters at the corners, Kylee took off for second, which would allow Briana to come home to make it 5-0.
San Diego got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Lauren Kane, but the Bruins responded with a run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Nickles walked, moved to second on an error and scored on a single by Rodriguez to make it 6-1.ย
UCLA added two more in the seventh on one swing of the bat, as Nickles doubled to left with one out, and one out later, Rodriguez crushed the first homer of her career to right to increase the margin to 8-1. San Diego would score twice in the seventh on an RBI single from Kailey Hill and an RBI double by Sara Silveyra, but the Bruins held on for the five-run win.
The Bruins close out the weekend on Sunday against Santa Clara at 11:30 a.m. Live stats will be available on UCLABruins.com. UCLA's originally-scheduled second game on Sunday afternoon against San Diego State was canceled due to a re-arrangement of the tournament slate following inclement weather on Saturday morning.
