A school-record seven UCLA teams ranked among the Top 10 percent within their sports for multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) to receive APR Public Recognition Awards for 2016-17.
The Bruin teams honored are men's cross country, men's volleyball, men's water polo, beach volleyball, women's golf, women's tennis and women's water polo. All seven teams competed at the NCAA Championships this year, with beach volleyball and men's water polo winning NCAA titles, men's volleyball finishing second, women's water polo tying for third and women's golf winning the Pac-12 title.
Women's golf received their ninth-straight Public Recognition Award. Men's volleyball earned their third-straight award, and men's tennis, women's water polo and beach volleyball received their second consecutive.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
Over 1,200 teams earned Public Recognition Awards this year, including 1,188 who posted perfect scores of 1,000. All seven UCLA honorees earned perfect marks.
"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "To have nine national champions so far this year โ including men's and women's basketball โ be among those recognized illustrates that student-athletes succeed athletically and academically."
