LOS ANGELESย -ย The third-seeded Bruins hit four home runs in their Super Regional opener on Thursday at Easton Stadium, including two by senior Madeline Jelenicki, as UCLA posted a 7-1 victory over No. 14-seed Arizona.
The Bruins improved to 55-5 on the season and are one win away from a fourth-consecutive trip to the Women's College World Series. Game two of the Los Angeles Super Regional will be at 6 p.m. on Friday and televised on ESPN2. Tickets are sold out for the rest of the Los Angeles Super Regional.
UCLA had 12 hits from eight different players, as Jelenicki, senior Kylee Perez, redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia and freshman Kinsley Washington all had two-hit contests. In the circle, Garcia (26-3) struck out eight in five shutout innings, giving up only one hit and one walk. She retired the first 10 batters of the game, posting 1-2-3 frames in four of her five innings, while striking out three in the fourth and two in the third. Freshman Holly Azevedo tossed the last two innings, fanning one and giving up an unearned run, two hits and one walk.
The Bruins scored single runs in each of the first three innings. In the bottom of the first, Perez led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman Briana Perez and scored on a double to center off the bat of redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan.
In the second, Jelenicki posted her first homer of the game and seventh of the season, going out to left-center, to make it 2-0. An inning later, Kylee Perez led off the third with a solo shot to right, her sixth of the year, to bring the lead to 3-0.
The Bruins busted it open with four runs in the fifth. Jordan led off with a walk, and was pinch-run for by junior Stevie Wisz, who came home on a long ball to center by Garcia, her 11th of the season, to make it 5-0. Sophomore Bubba Nickles followed with a single and came home on Jelenicki's second homer of the game and eighth of the season, as she went the opposite way to right this time to extend the advantage to 7-0.
Arizona (43-15) scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh on an RBI grounder by Malia Martinez, but Azevedo got a strikeout to end the game.
