LOS ANGELESย -ย The third-seeded Bruins got another outstanding performance in the circle by redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia, and added some timely hitting, with two of their three runs coming with two outs, as UCLA advanced to the Women's College World Series for the fourth year in a row and 28thย time with a 3-2 victory over No. 14 Arizona on Friday to sweep the Los Angeles Super Regional at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 56-5 overall and will face the winner of the Tallahassee Super Regional between No. 6 Florida State and No. 11 LSU next Thursday, May 31 in Oklahoma City. Times will be announced following the conclusion of the Super Regional round. Arizona concludes its season at 43-16.
Garcia (27-3) struck out 10 in a complete-game four-hitter, giving up two runs and one walk in her seven innings. She struck out the side in the fifth and two each in the second and fourth, recording 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth, sixth and seventh. The Bruins' offense had eight hits from five different players, as sophomore Bubba Nickles went 3-for-3 and freshman Briana Perez had two hits.
Arizona, playing as the home team, drew first blood in the bottom of the first, as Alyssa Palomino hit a two-run homer to right. The Wildcats would get two more baserunners in their first at-bat, but left them on, and had only two baserunners for the rest of the game, with nobody else reaching second base.
The Bruins posted single runs in the second, third and fourth. In the second, Garcia led off with a walk, and one out later, Nickles singled to right to move Garcia to third. Following a walk to junior Brianna Tautalafua, junior Taylor Pack was hit by a pitch to force in Garcia and get the Bruins to within one.
In the third, Briana Perez extended her hitting streak to 19 games with a leadoff double. The 19-game streak is tied for the fourth longest in school history. A walk to redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan put two on base, and after Arizona retired the next two Bruins, Nickles stroked a single to left to plate Perez to even the score at two.
UCLA took the lead in the fourth on another two-out rally. Senior Kylee Perez reached on a two-out bunt single, Briana Perez singled to center and Jordan singled up the middle to bring home Kylee to put the Bruins up by a run, which proved to be the game-winner.
