Pair of Bruins on College FB Hall of Fame Ballot
June 04, 2018 | Football
Cade McNown and Ken Norton Jr. were included on the 2019 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame announced on Monday by The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. The ballot includes 76 players and six coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 100 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks.
McNown was a four-year starter at quarterback who compiled a 30-14 record under center and led UCLA on a school record 20-game win streak during his junior and senior seasons. He went on to earn consensus All-America honors and Co-Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year accolades in 1998. That season, he won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and placed third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. He also set school single-season records for passing yards (3,470), touchdown passes (25) and total offense (3,652). McNown finished his Bruin career 4-0 in games versus USC and ranked No. 1 in the conference in career total offense (11,285) and No. 3 in the league in career passing yards (10,708). He remains the UCLA single-game leader in total offense, with 515 yards, and passing yards, with 513. McNown was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame this past year.
Norton was a member of four bowl-winning teams, including the 1986 Rose Bowl squad which posted a victory over Iowa, while playing linebacker at UCLA from 1984-87 on squads which produced an overall 36-10-2 record. The Bruins also earned a share of the conference title in the 1987 season after tying the school mark for wins with 10. Norton was the team's leading tackler in both the 1986 (106) and 1987 (125) campaigns and was a finalist for the 1987 Butkus Award. He earned All-America honors in 1987 after spearheading one of the nation's top defenses which recorded two shutouts that year and limited nine opponents to less than 20 points. He finished his Bruin career ranked fifth on the all-time school tackles list (339). Norton was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
"It's an enormous honor to just be on the ballot when you think that more than 5.26 million people have played college football and only 997 players have been inducted," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hall's requirement of being a First-Team All-American creates a much smaller pool of about 1,500 individuals who are even eligible. Being in today's elite group means an individual is truly among the greatest to have ever played the game, and those actually elected to the Class will be part of a momentous year as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football in 2019."
The ballot was emailed on Monday to the more than 12,000 NFF members and current Hall of Famers whose votes will be tabulated and submitted to the NFF's Honors Courts, which will deliberate and select the class. The announcement of the 2019 Class will be made Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in Santa Clara, Calif. The city is serving as the host for the CFP National Championship, which will be played later that day at Levi's Stadium. The 2019 class will officially be inducted during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10, 2019, at the New York Hilton Midtown.ย
