LOS ANGELES – Road trips to Georgia and Indiana, as well as a trek out east to face Hartford and Virginia, highlight the non-conference portion of the 2019-20 UCLA women's basketball season. The Bruins will play 11 non-conference games, including facing five teams that made postseason play a year ago.
"I am so driven and committed to continuing to grow our players and this program," said The Michael Price Family UCLA Women's Head Basketball Coach Cori Close. "Our commitment and focus is at an all-time high. The non-conference schedule will be critical in helping us go from talented individual pieces, to one synergistic unit. We're excited to get back on the hardwood."
UCLA will tip-off the 2019-20 campaign with a five-game home stretch, starting with Weber State in the season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins will follow that up with a Saturday, Nov. 9 matchup against Loyola Marymount, who finished tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference last season and reached the WNIT.
Games against Long Beach State (Thursday, Nov. 14), Northern Colorado (Friday, Nov. 22) and Yale (Tuesday, Nov. 26) will cap UCLA's five-game homestand. Northern Colorado, coached by former UCLA assistant Jenny Huth (2011-18), had a 20-win season a year ago, posting a 21-11 mark, finishing tied for second in the Big Sky at 15-5 overall and reaching the WNIT First Round.
UCLA's first road trip of the 2019-20 campaign will take the Bruins to Charlottesville, Va., for the Cavalier Classic, hosted by the University of Virginia. The Bruins will take on Central Florida on Saturday, Nov. 30, followed by an ACC opponent in Virginia on Sunday, Dec. 1. Last season, UCF finished 26-7 overall and went 13-3 in the American Athletic Conference before reaching the first round of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 12 seed.
The Bruins will have a short break before playing CSU-Northridge on Saturday, Dec. 7 on the road, followed by their final home non-conference game against Pacific on Sunday, Dec. 15. Pacific was a team that finished 19-13 in 2018-19 and reached the second round of the WNIT.
UCLA's final two non-conference games will be at SEC-power Georgia (Thursday, Dec. 19) and Big Ten-foe Indiana (Sunday, Dec. 22). The Bruins knocked off then-ranked No. 14 Georgia last season by a final score of 80-69, one of seven triumphs over ranked opponents in 2018-19. UCLA will seek revenge against the Hoosiers, a team won 21 games last season and ultimately upset seventh-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Bruins return three starters from a year ago, including All-Pac-12 selection Michaela Onyenwere, who led the team in scoring with 18.3 points per contest and became the fourth Bruin in program history to score 600 or more points in a single season. UCLA also brings back floor general Japreece Dean, who averaged 14.1 points, 4.9 assists and shot 92.2. percent (107-for-116) from the charity stripe, setting a UCLA single-season record for free throw percentage. Lindsey Corsaro started all but one game in 2018-19 and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team after she averaged 7.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 2018-19.
UCLA is coming off its fourth-straight trip to the Sweet 16, making the Bruins one of just eight women's college basketball programs to do so. The Bruins finished 22-13 overall, picking up a pair of top-10 road wins at No. 2 Oregon (74-69) and No. 9 Maryland (85-80). UCLA finished second in the NCAA and first in the Pac-12 in offensive rebounds per game (17.3), and also led the Pac-12 in both free throws made (492) and attempts (670).
The Bruins' complete schedule, along with game times, will be finalized in September.
Season tickets for the 2019-20 women's basketball are available, starting at only $99. Fans can call (310) 206-5991, email tickets@athletics.ucla.edu, or click here for more information.
