SERIES HISTORY
LMU: This is the 12th meeting between UCLA and Loyola Marymount with the Bruins leading the all-time series, 9-2, having won the last seven meetings. The Bruins have won the last four meetings by way of a 5-0 sweep, including last week at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, Calif., on March 26. The last win for LMU was a 3-2 victory on April 12, 2014 at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge in Hermosa Beach, Calif. USC: This is the 17th meeting between UCLA and USC with the Trojans leading the all-time series, 9-7. After losing the first seven duals to the Trojans from 2013 to 2017, UCLA finally cracked the code at the 2017 Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship in Tucson, Ariz., defeating the Trojans 3-2 in the semifinals. But USC came back to beat the Bruins in the finals to win its second straight Pac-12 title. However, UCLA has gone 7-2 against USC in the last nine meetings dating back to 2017. Last year, UCLA went 5-1 against USC, picking up its first-ever win over the Trojans at Merle Norman Stadium (Feb. 28), 3-2. Three days later (Mar. 3), the Trojans won 3-2 at Zuma Beach. But from then on, it was all UCLA as the Bruins posted a 3-2 win at UCLA (Apr. 4), a 3-2 win in the Pac-12 Semifinals (Apr. 28), a 3-1 win in the Pac-12 Championship game (Apr. 28) and a 3-1 win in the contender's bracket at the NCAA Championship (May 5). The Bruins also posted a 3-2 win earlier this year at USC (Feb. 27).
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The Bruins opened a 6-0 week with a pair of 5-0 wins over Oregon and No. 13 Loyola Marymount at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, Calif. Then UCLA headed to Miami, Fla., to compete in the FIU Surf-N-Turf Invitational, posting a 4-1 win over No. 4 LSU and a 5-0 win over No. 10 Stetson on Friday, March 29. The Bruins concluded the tournament with a 4-1 win over No. 3 Florida State and a 5-0 win at No. 8 FIU on Sunday, March 30.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
UCLA is facing another tough schedule in 2019 as 24 of its 29 opponents during the regular season are currently ranked in the latest AVCA Top 20 Poll. During the regular season, the Bruins are currently slated to play 15 duals against teams ranked in the Top 10 with 10 of them currently in the Top 5. Of the five duals scheduled against unranked teams, four are receiving votes and one, Saint Mary's, cracked the Top 20 after the Bruins defeated them in the first week of competition. Only one opponent, Oregon on March 26, is not receiving votes in this week's AVCA Top 20 Poll.
RECAPPING 2018
UCLA won its first-ever NCAA Championship in beach volleyball in 2018 with an overall record of 40-4 (.909). The 40 wins were a school and NCAA single-season record. UCLA also won a school-record 31 consecutive duals during the 2018 campaign and won its first-ever Pac-12 Conference Championship, defeating the defending champions USC twice on the same day to win the title. The Bruins beat the best all season long with 33 of their 40 victories coming in wins over nationally-ranked teams and going 5-1 on the year against the defending NCAA Champions, USC. Additionally, all four losses on the year were to teams ranked in the top four. During the school-record winning streak, the Bruins swept 17 opponents (5-0, one truncated in NCAAs) with 26 of the 31 victories coming against ranked teams (13 of them ranked in the top 10 and seven of them ranked in the top five). The streak came to an end when No. 4 Florida State defeated top-seeded UCLA, 3-1, in the second match of the 2018 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship. Additionally, then-junior Izzy Carey and then-freshman Megan Muret set the UCLA record for most consecutive match victories on any court at 28. The streak was snapped by USC's Alexandria Poletto and Haley Hallgren in three sets in the winner's bracket final of the Pac-12 Championship, 12-21, 21-17, 15-12 (tied the dual at 1-1, UCLA eventually won the dual 3-2, and then defeated USC again, 3-1, in the title game to win its first Pac-12 Championship).
FAMILIAR FACES
The 2019 UCLA starting lineup should be very familiar as the Bruins return 9-of-10 starters from a year ago on the five courts. Courts 1 (seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara), 2 (junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil), and 5 (senior Izzy Carey and sophomore Megan Muret) all return. The Bruins took court 3 (senior Zana Muno and junior Savvy Simo) and split up the dynamic duo. Muno is currently paired with freshman Abby Van Winkle, the only newcomer to crack the top 10, and is on court 3. Simo is paired with sophomore Mac May and is on court 4. UCLA said goodbye to only one senior that played last year, Elise Zappia. Zappia was paired with May on court 4 for most of the 2018 season.
HALL OF FAME MENTORS
U.S. Olympian and UCLA Hall of Famer Stein Metzger is in his seventh season at the helm of the UCLA Beach Volleyball program. He sports an overall record of 131-38 (.775) and has gone 91-10 (.901) in the last two-plus seasons (2017-19). His 100th career victory came in a 4-1 win at No. 13 Stanford on April 8, 2018. Metzger was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018 and was also named the USMC/AVCA National Coach of the Year in both of those seasons. Metzger now has four NCAA Championships to his credit (three as a player in 1993, 1995 and 1996 and one as a coach in 2018).
Entering her sixth year with the Bruins, Assistant Coach Jenny Johnson Jordan is also a U.S. Olympian and a recent UCLA Hall of Fame inductee (Oct. 5, 2018). Like Metzger, Jordan has also won NCAA titles as both a player (1991) and a coach (2018). Jordan was also recently inducted into the CBVA Hall of Fame (Nov. 3, 2018).
BRUINS COMPLETE COACHING STAFF WITH POLLOCK
Former TCU standout and current professional beach volleyball player, Irene Pollock, joins the Bruins' beach volleyball staff in 2019 as the Volunteer Assistant Coach. Pollock replaces Jeff Alzina, who was named the Associate Head Coach for indoor volleyball and beach volleyball at Santa Clara on Feb. 8, 2019.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA enters the week ranked at No. 1 in the AVCA and DiG Magazine Top 20 Polls for the sixth straight week in 2019. The Bruins have been ranked for 37 straight weeks in the AVCA Poll, dating back to the preseason poll of 2016. UCLA earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in program history (Mar. 26, 2018) after knocking off then No. 1 Pepperdine. UCLA is one of only four programs in the history of the AVCA Poll to be ranked No. 1 (USC-25 weeks, Pepperdine-17 weeks, UCLA-11 weeks, Hawai'i-one week). Additionally, UCLA has been ranked in the top five for 37 consecutive weeks and has been nationally ranked in 53 of 54 all-time polls by the AVCA.
SWEEPING SUCCESS
The Bruins have swept 14 opponents in the 21 victories during the 2019 season. Of the 14 sweeps, 10 have been against teams ranked in the Top 20 (#11 Stanford, #11 California, #19 TCU, #13 Loyola Marymount) and six have been against teams ranked in the Top 10 (#6 Cal Poly, #5 Hawai'i, at #3 Pepperdine, #5 Pepperdine, #10 Stetson, and at #8 FIU). An additional three teams were receiving votes at the time (Saint Mary's, now ranked #18, Arizona State and Washington).
COMBINED SUCCESS
While undefeated on the year at 21-0, the UCLA Bruins are a combined 97-8 (.924) across all five flights, going a team-best 20-1 (.952) at flights one, two and five. At flight three, UCLA is a combined 19-2 (.905), but senior Zana Muno and freshman Abby Van Winkle are a perfect 16-0. The Bruins' most experimental flight, which is flight four, is also its least successful at 18-3 (.857). The Bruins have used five different combinations at flight four with sophomore Lea Monkhouse and junior Savvy Simo spending the most time there at 10-2 (.833).
A TOUGH OUT
While UCLA is 97-8 (.924) across all five flights in 2019, they have been beaten in straight sets four times, one each at flights 1-4. But the Bruins have won in straight sets in 78 of their 97 flight victories (78-4 in two-set matches, .951). The Bruins have had considerable success in three-set matches, going a combined 19-4 (.826) in the third set (3-0 at flights one and two, 7-1 at flight three, 5-1 at flight five, and 1-2 at flight four).
McNAMARA/McNAMARA NAMED AVCA/COLLEGEBEACHVB.COM PAIR OF THE WEEK
UCLA seniors Megan and Nicole McNamara (Vancouver, BC, Canada) were named the AVCA/CollegeBeachVB.com national Pair of the Week as announced by the AVCA (Apr. 2). The Bruins remained unbeaten after a perfect 6-0 week, which included going 4-0 at the Surf & Turf Invitational thanks in part to the Canadian twins. From the No. 1 position, they swept their four matches defeating three pairs who have garnered the pair of the week award earlier this season (Stetson's Carly Perales/Sunniva Helland-Hansen, LSU's Claire Coppola/Kristen Nuss, and Florida State's Alaina Chacon/Madison Fitzpatrick). Their lone loss of the season came on February 27th and they have rattled off 15 straight victories since. This is UCLA's fourth AVCA/CollegeBeachVB.com Pair of the Week honor for the Bruins, which is the most in collegiate beach. The McNamara pair takes home their second award after winning it on April 3rd of last year.
COURT ONE'S McNAMARA/McNAMARA NAMED PAC-12 PAIR OF THE WEEK
UCLA seniors Megan and Nicole McNamara (Vancouver, BC, Canada) have been named the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week as announced by the league office on Apr. 2. The Bruin duo helped defending NCAA and Pac-12 Champion UCLA remain undefeated at 21-0 on the year, going 6-0 last week on court one and without dropping a set. The Bruins defeated five ranked teams including four in the top 10, sweeping four of their opponents for a total of 14 sweeps on the year. The pair's wins clinched three dual victories for the Bruins (Loyola Marymount, Stetson, and FIU) last week and they lead UCLA in that category with six clinching wins on the year. The duo has won 15-straight matches, all in straight sets and all on court one, to improve to 18-1 on the year. Twelve of the 15 wins were against ranked teams with nine of them being in the top 10. The twin sisters are both sociology majors with 3.8 GPAs. It is the first weekly honor for the pair and the fifth of their career. It is also the 10th all-time for a UCLA duo and the second this season.
COURT TWO'S JUSTINE/SPONCIL NAMED AVCA/COLLEGEBEACHVB.COM PAIR OF THE WEEK
UCLA senior Sarah Sponcil (Phoenix, Ariz.) and junior Lily Justine (Chico, Calif.) were named the AVCA/CollegeBeachVB.com national Pair of the Week as announced by the AVCA (Mar. 5). The UCLA Bruins continued their perfect start (9-0) after winning four duals on the week. Justine and Sponcil swept all four of their matches from the No. 2 position, extending their undefeated run to nine straight this season. In a 3-2 win at No. 2 USC on Feb. 27, it all came down to their court, which Justine and Sponcil handled easily in two sets with a 21-18, 21-14, win over Terese Cannon and Sammy Slater. In the eight total sets played on the week, they only once surrendered more than 14 points in a set and three times held opponents to 10 or fewer points. The pair won a total of 168 points while dropping just 93. The tandem provided two clinching dual point victories at No. 2 USC and against Washington (RV). After the win over USC, the Bruins posted three straight 5-0 sweeps at the Pac-12 South Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., beginning with Arizona State (RV) and UW (RV) on Saturday, March 2 and culminating with No. 11 California on Sunday, March 3.
COURT TWO'S JUSTINE/SPONCIL NAMED PAC-12 PAIR OF THE WEEK
UCLA senior Sarah Sponcil (Phoenix, Ariz.) and junior Lily Justine (Chico, Calif.) have been named the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week as announced by the league office on Feb. 26. The Bruin duo helped defending NCAA and Pac-12 Champion UCLA equal its best start to a season in program history (2015) at 5-0 with four sweeps and four wins over ranked teams in the opening weekend of beach volleyball competition. The 5-0 wins came against No. 6 Cal Poly, No. 5 Hawai'i, No. 11 Stanford and Saint Mary's. Then UCLA closed out the weekend with a 4-1 win over fourth-ranked Pepperdine. The pair went 3-0 in three-set matches, keeping UCLA perfect at 9-0 on the year in three-set matches across all five courts. It also claimed a pair of straight-set victories. It is the second-career Pair of the Week honor for the duo that secured the clinching point (3-1) to win the NCAA Championship over Florida State last season. It is the ninth all-time weekly nod for the Bruins.
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
The Bruins return all four players from a year ago that played every dual on courts one and two, and three of them are seniors. One court one, three-time First Team AVCA All-American seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara (Vancouver, BC, Canada) were named First Team All-Americans and the court one Pair of the Year by VolleyMob in 2018. The duo set a UCLA record for wins in a season going 35-7 on the year, all on court one. The 5-foot-9-inch twin sisters are the shortest team on court one in the nation, but went 7-1 during postseason play including a 4-0 mark at the NCAA Championship in 2018, helping lead UCLA to its first-ever national title in beach volleyball. The McNamaras sported a record of 30-7 against ranked teams (two more matches against ranked teams were truncated at the NCAA Championship). The twins were never swept (31-0 in matches decided in two sets) on the season with all seven losses coming in three sets. Nicole McNamara was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year while she and Megan were named the Pac-12 Pair of the Year. The tandem was also tabbed to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team and to the NCAA All-Tournament Team on court one. They also recorded a personal-best winning streak of 16 consecutive duals during the season. Both players were named First Team All-Pac-12. The pair also clinched 11 victories in dual matches on the year for the Bruins.
On court two, the pair of junior Lily Justine (Chico, Calif.) and senior Sarah Sponcil (Phoenix, Ariz.) were also named First Team All-Americans and the court two Pair of the Year by VolleyMob a year ago. The duo went 33-8 on the year, all on court two. The pair also had a stellar postseason record of 6-1, going 3-0 in the Pac-12 Championship and 3-1 in the NCAA Championship. They posted both of the dual clinching wins on NCAA Championship Sunday, May 6, picking up victories over No. 3 Hawai'i and No. 4 Florida State. The Bruins faced 39 ranked opponents in the 44 duals with this duo going 28-8 against ranked teams, including going 16-1 against ranked squads to end the year. They were named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team and also recorded a personal-best winning streak of 15 consecutive duals during the season. Both players were named First Team All-Pac-12 and honorable mention AVCA All-Americans. The pair also clinched 12 victories in dual matches on the year for the Bruins to lead the team in that category.
DUAL PARTICIPATION
The Bruins have four crossover student-athletes on this year's roster -- one from each class from the indoor team -- that will lend their experience and expertise to the beach volleyball program in 2019. They include freshman Hawley Harrer, sophomore Mac May, junior Savvy Simo and senior Zana Muno. May went 25-10 overall on the year last year, starting on court four for most of the season with newly departed Elise Zappia (graduation). The duo went 22-6 overall (21-6 on court four). Simo and Muno paired together for most of the season on court three, going 25-5 overall (22-4 on court three). Simo also spent time with May, Chanti Holroyd and Madi Yeomans while posting a 33-10 combined record. Muno, who missed some time due to an undisclosed injury, only paired with Simo in 2018. May, Muno, and Simo were all named Third Team All-Americans last year by VolleyMob.
DEPTH PERCEPTION
Senior Izzy Carey (Westlake Village, Calif.) and sophomore Megan Muret (Encinitas, Calif.) were also named First Team All-Americans and the court five Pair of the Year by VolleyMob. The duo had the second-best overall record on the team at 34-8 (30-4 on court five and 4-4 on court four). The tandem also went 29-8 on the year against ranked teams. They were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team on court five, going 5-3 in postseason play, including 3-1 at the NCAA Championship. They set a UCLA record for most consecutive dual match victories at 28 (March 8 through April 28), which included wins over 23 ranked teams (10 in the top 10 and five in the top five). The pair also clinched four victories in dual matches on the year for the Bruins, which had a school-record 31 dual match winning streak that began when Carey/Muret began their 28 dual-match winning streak.
The Bruins also return the services of junior Madi Yeomans, who came on for the injured Zana Muno at the Pac-12 Championship, pairing with Savvy Simo to clinch the Bruins' first-ever Pac-12 Championship with a straight-set win over USC's Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn, 21-19, 21-16 on court three. The duo was named to the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team.
FRESH FACES
UCLA brought in a stellar recruiting class for 2019 that includes four of the eight First Team AVCA High School Beach All-Americans. The four UCLA Bruins named to the first team includes Abby Van Winkle (San Clemente, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS), Lindsey Sparks (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS), Piper Monk-Heidrich (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) and Jaden Whitmarsh (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS). This year's recruiting class was later bolstered by Hawai'i sophomore transfer Lea Monkhouse, the 2018 Big West Freshman of the Year. All five newbies are vying for playing time this season in an already crowded lineup.
PAC-12ย BEACH VOLLEYBALL
In 2016, beach volleyball was added as the 23rd Pac-12-sponsored sport beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. Now with nineย member institutions (Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah and Washington)ย currently fielding beach volleyball teams, the Conference of Champions was the first major conference to sponsor beach volleyball as an official sport.ย As part of the addition, the Pac-12 will also sponsor a Beach Volleyball Championship for the fourth straight season. This year, USC will serveย as the hosts from April 25-27.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION
For the fourth straight season The NCAAยฎ National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will be held May 3-5 at the Gulf Shores Public Beach and will be hosted by the city of Gulf Shores, Alabama and Orange Beach Sports Commission.ย The host institution for the beach volleyball championship will be the University of Alabama at Birmingham.ย Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 69 sponsoring schools at the Division I level, which is up fromย 65 in 2017 and 47 from 2016.ย The addition of the beach volleyball championship in 2016ย became the 45th NCAA championship administered for women and the 90th NCAA championship overall. The championship will have an eight-team bracket that will be played in a double-elimination format with teams consisting of five pairs of female student-athletes. After being placed on the list of emerging sports for women in 2009, beach volleyball is the fifth sport to succeed from the emerging sports program.
