Pettway Earns Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week Honors
February 25, 2020 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ UCLA junior right-hander Zach Pettway has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.
Pettway led the Bruins to a 5-0 shutout win in last Friday's series opener against St. Mary's College, striking out a career-high 13 while allowing just three hits, all with two outs.
The Long Beach, Calif. native didn't walk a single batter in his 6 2/3 inning outing.
He struck out at least one batter in each inning he entered, and struck out the side in three consecutive innings (2-4). During that streak, he fanned five consecutive batters.
Pettway's 13 strikeouts are tied for the second-most single-game Ks by a Bruin since the beginning of the 2012 season, trailing only Ryan Garcia's 14-strikeout effort against Utah on Apr. 26, 2019.
This is the second Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award in Pettway's career. He was previously honored after striking out eight over seven shutout innings against then-No. 3 Oregon State on Mar. 15, 2019.
UCLA is 7-0 to start the new campaign, and owns an outstanding 0.71 team ERA. The Bruins have allowed just five runs over their first seven games, a new program record. The team has five games this week, starting with an international exhibition against ย Keio University on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
