LOS ANGELES – Catcher Sharlize Palacios was named Pac-12 Player of the Week and pitcher Kaitlyn Terry was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Monday.
This marks the first weekly conference honor in both Palacios and Terry's careers.
Palacios led the No. 15 UCLA softball team (17-6, 3-0 Pac-12) in its three wins over Rutgers and LMU last week. The redshirt senior from Chula Vista went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with a team-high seven runs batted in and nine total bases. Four of Palacios' five base hits scored a run.
In the first game of UCLA's double-header versus LMU on Saturday, Palacios hit a towering home run to dead center for the sixth grand slam of her career. She hit a hot shot past the LMU third baseman to score the first run of that game as well. Against Rutgers on Tuesday, Palacios tied a career high with three hits (11th time). Palacios doubled and singled in a run in that game.
Palacios now ranks third in the Pac-12 with a .780 slugging percentage and is tied for third with seven home runs. She leads the Bruins in round-trippers and ranks second with 21 RBI.
Terry picked up two wins in the circle and threw her third complete-game shutout of the season in game two versus LMU last week. The freshman southpaw struck out five batters and gave up three hits and two walks against the Lions.
Terry now sports a perfect 8-0 record with a 2.42 earned run average. She ranks tied for first among Pac-12 freshmen in wins.
Palacios, Terry and the Bruins travel north to Seattle, Wash. for their first Pac-12 road trip of the season at No. 7 Washington. The Bruins and Huskies open the series Friday, March 22 at 5 p.m. (PT) at Husky Softball Stadium. Fans can watch all three games of the series on the Pac-12 Networks.
