UCLA Baseball Signs Zack Ortiz to National Letter of Intent

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball program has received a signed National Letter of Intent from Zack Ortiz, a right-handed pitcher in his senior season at Cypress High School (Cypress, Calif.), as announced this week by seventh-year head coach John Savage.
Ortiz joins eight other baseball players who have inked National Letters of Intent to enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2011 and play baseball for the Bruins in 2012.
A two-sport student-athlete at Cypress High School, Ortiz has gone 6-2 with a 0.41 ERA in 51.0 innings this spring, totaling 59 strikeouts and 15 walks. He has allowed seven runs (three earned) on the mound, batting at a .390 clip with two home runs, six doubles, 15 RBI and 12 runs. He played on the Cypress High School varsity football team as a quarterback during his sophomore and junior years.
"We are very excited about Zack and his potential at the college level," Savage said. "He has a great feel for the strike zone and should be a pitcher that will help us immediately."
Last week, Ortiz was named ocvarsity.com's athlete of the week, pitching a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 6-1 victory over Kennedy, before going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in a 9-2 win against Kennedy (both in Empire League play).
Ortiz joins a recruiting class that already features right-handed pitchers Michael Kerman and Joe Ross, catcher Austin Hedges, outfielder Eric Snyder and infielders Tyler Goeddel, Chris Keck, Kevin Kramer and Shane Zeile.
