Mike Maynard enters his fifth season as the UCLA Director of Track and Field, overseeing the men’s and women’s programs following three seasons as men’s head coach as well as the throws coach for both the men’s and women’s squads. Before coming to UCLA, Maynard was head coach/throws coach at Boise State for nine years.

The Bruins took a giant step forward in 2016 on the national stage. The Bruins garnered 16 All-America honors, including eight first team accolades. The UCLA men placed third at the Pac-12 Championships and finished 18th at the NCAA Championships. On top of the on the field success, 22 athletes were tabbed to the Pac-12 All-Academic teams.

At the Pac-12 Championships Nicholas Scarvelis won both the shot put and the discus. Kylie Price won the long jump. Scarvelis went on to earn first team All-America honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The men’s DMR garnered first team accolades as well during the indoor campaign. At the outdoor championships, freshman sensation Rai Benjamin was a first-teamer in the 400mH while Braheme Days joined Scarvelis on the podium in the shot put.

In his third season as director, individual performances highlighted the 2015 season for the Bruins. UCLA had 13 athletes honored by the USTFCCCA during the outdoor campaign with five earning All-American honors while eight garnered honorable mention accolades. At the Pac-12 Championships the men’s team finished fourth while the women’s team was fifth. During the indoor campaign, the Bruins sent five athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Four were named All-American while one earned honorable mention accolades. Academically, the Bruins excelled once again as 18 earned MPSF honors and 15 were named to the Pac-12 academic team. Ida Storm was named a Capital One Academic All-American.

Individually, his athletes thrived at the national level once again. Storm earned All-American honors in the weight throw as she was the runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She set the MPSF Championship record in the event and later in the outdoor season she went on to win the Pac-12 title in the hammer. She left UCLA as the all-time record holder in both events and was a seven-time All-American. Derek Eager extended his sixth ranked javelin throw in UCLA history to qualify for the NCAA national meet. Alec Faldermeyer was also a national qualifier while Zaybree Haury recorded the third best javelin throw in UCLA history en route to another NCAA qualifying season.

In his second season at the helm of both programs the Bruins made large strides on the national stage. The men’s track and field program was headlined in 2014 by a dual meet win over rival USC and some impressive individual performances. Five Bruins earned USTFCCCA All-American honors. At the Pac-12 Championships sophomore Nicholas Scarvelis won the shot put title with a throw of 63-10.25, to win the event by over three feet. Senior Julian Wruck defended his Pac-12 discus title with a mark of 210-9. En route to earning All-American accolades, Wruck placed second at the NCAA meet in the discus, Scarvelis finished 10^th in the shot put, Matthew Kosecki was 12^th in the discus, Cody Danielson was 14^th in the javelin and Nick Hartle was 16^th in the 800m. During the indoor season, Marcus Nilsson and Mike Woepse earned USTFCCCA All-American honors after Nilsson placed eighth in the heptathlon and Woepse was 13^th in the pole vault.

The UCLA’s women’s program showcased six student-athletes that were named USTFCCCA All-Americans. Leading the way for the Bruins at the NCAA Championships was junior Kylie Price in the long jump, who placed third to earn her third straight All-America honor. Senior Natasha Kolbo capped off her Bruin career with a 13^th place finish in the pole vault. Junior Zibby Boyer made her first NCAA meet appearance and earned All-America accolades by placing 17^th in the high jump. Junior Alexis Walker was named an All-American in just her first season competing in the heptathlon. A pair of UCLA hurdlers also garnered All-American honors as Brea Buchanan and Trinity Wilson made the finals in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA meet. During the indoor campaign, a trio of Bruins earned USTFCCCA All-American honors. Ida storm was runner-up in the weight throw while Kelsey Smith placed 16^th in the 3,000m and Kylie Price was 14^th in the long jump.

Under his direct tutelage, Maynard was instrumental in the development of three javelin throwers that qualified for nationals. Newcomer Zaybree Haury tossed the third longest throw in school history en route to qualifying for the national meet while redshirt freshman Cody Danielson threw the ninth best mark and also qualified for the NCAA meet. Derek Eager came back from injury and also qualified for the national meet.

In the discus Wruck and Kosecki shined once again as and during the indoor season Ida Storm hit a big personal best to earn runner-up honors at the national championship.

In his first season overseeing both programs both the men and women finished in the top five of the Pac-12 with the men placing third and the women fourth. The men went on to place 12^th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and the women placed in the top 25 with a 20^th place finish, At the 2013 Indoor Championships, the women were 15^th while the men placed 49^th.

Individually, Julian Wruck posted one of the finest seasons in collegiate track, culminating in a NCAA title and an appearance at The Bowerman Trophy presentation, where he was one of three male finalists for the prestigious award. Wruck set the collegiate record in the discus and boasted the top 27 throws of any collegian in 2013.

At the NCAA Indoor Championships UCLA had four All-Americans. Mike Woepse (7^th in pole vault), Kylie Price (4^th in long jump), Brea Buchanan (5^th in 60 mH) and Allison Koressel (5ht in pole vault). At the outdoor championships, nine earned All-American honors. Wruck (1^st in discus), Marcus Nilsson (3^rd in decathlon), Alec Faldermeyer (7^th in high jump), Dominic Giovannoni (13^th in decathlon), Turquoise Thompson (3^rd in 400mH), Ida Storm (5ht in hammer), Kylie Price (6^th in long jump/100m) and Brea Buchanan earned honorable mention All-American accolades. Woepse and Wruck also won Pac-12 titles in their respective events.

In 2012 the men continued to excel. At the Pac-12 Championships, the Bruin men finished fourth overall with 86 points as Alec Faldermeyer and redshirt Matthew Kosecki captured conference titles in their respective events. The men’s team finished 17th overall at the NCAA Championships, led by impressive performances from three sophomores - Mike Woepse(2nd in pole vault), Alec Faldermeyer (3rd in hammer); and Marcus Nilsson(6th in decathlon), which earned all three first-team All-America honors. The 4x100m relay of Jamal Alston, Maxwell Dyce, R.J. Frasier and Laijon White earned second-team All-America honors (16th) along with discus thrower Matthew Kosecki (10th). Derek Eager (javelin) and Dyce (200m) earned honorable mention All-America honors in their respective events.

In the NCAA indoor Championships, the Bruins were represented by sophomores Alec Faldermeyer, Mike Woepse and Marcus Nilsson and freshman Dustin Fay. In the pole vault, Woepse finished 14th overall and earned second-team USTFCCCA All-American honors. In the 5000m, Fay did not race due to an injury. Faldermeyer placed fifth in the 35-lb weight throw and picked up the third first-team All-American honor of his career. Nilsson finished eleventh in the heptathlon and earned the first All-American (2nd team) of his career.

The 2011 season was highlighted by double All-American as a freshman, Alec Faldermeyer (weight/hammer) and standout half-miler Cory Primm (1:44.71, new school record). Faldermeyer also won the 2011 USATF Junior National hammer crown and a gold medal at the PanAm Junior Games. Maynard also coached Derek Eager, a redshirt during the 2011 season, to the USATF Jr. National javelin crown and a spot in the PanAm Junior Games. The men finished tied for third at the Pac-10 championships as Primm and Greg Woepse captured individual titles. Several athletes competed at NCAAs and earned All-American honors as the men finished 37th as a team.

Maynard also coached then freshman hammer thrower, Ida Storm, to double All-American honors in the weight throw and hammer in 2011.

In his first year in charge of the men’s program (2010), the Bruins found much success. During the indoor and outdoor season, UCLA athletes posted two school records and four marks on the all-time top-10 list. Cory Primm set the school record in the 800m (1:45.70), while the DMR team broke the indoor mark (9:31.70). The 4x100m relay, Primm, Scott Crawford (800m) and Dylan Knight (steeple) each competed at the NCAA Outdoor meet, with Primm placing fifth to earn All-American honors. The 4x100m relay also earned All-American honors after advancing to the relay final at Outdoors.

Three throwers redshirted the 2010 season, while others battled injuries throughout the year. Bo Taylor, Nigel Davies, Tom Nagengast and Mark Weber all competed in the post-season.

In his nine years as the head coach at Boise State, Maynard led a program which produced several historic events - back-to-back (2004 and 2005) national championships by Gabe Wallin in the men’s javelin, over 50 new school record performances and 30 All-American accolades. The Broncos enjoyed unprecedented success behind Maynard’s direction.

During the 2009 season, the men’s team won the WAC Indoor Championship, finished 27th at the NCAA Indoor Championships and 25th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The women’s team placed 19th at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The top individual highlight was Eleni Kafourou becoming the first female student-athlete at Boise State to win a NCAA National Championship (long jump). Along with Kafourou’s national title, Boise State earned a total of seven NCAA All-America awards in track and field that year.

Boise State also made its presence known at the national level with Maynard at the helm with four straight top 25 finishes for the men’s team at the NCAA National Outdoor Championships. The Bronco men were 16th at the 2006 NCAA National Outdoor Championships, 14th in 2005, 15th in 2004 and 24th in 2003. In 2009, the Bronco men finished 25th at the NCAA Outdoor meet.

Maynard guided Bronco student-athletes to over 70 individual WAC Championships and over 90 marks on Boise State’s all-time top three performance lists.

Maynard came to Boise State following an outstanding assistant coaching career at the University of Arizona. He was the associate head track and field coach for the Wildcat program for 13 years prior to joining the Broncos. While coaching at Arizona, Maynard guided 32 individual NCAA Division I All-Americans, including three NCAA National Champions.

Maynard’s coaching resume also includes a two-year stint as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Arizona, where he worked with the Wildcat football program as well as being responsible for the Arizona track and field, swimming and tennis teams. He began his collegiate coaching career at Mesa Community College (Ariz.) where he was the assistant track and field coach from 1982-84, and in 1987.

Maynard was also instrumental in bringing a world-class facility to Bronco Track & Field. During his first two years leading the Broncos, Maynard and Boise State were successful in purchasing a world championship caliber track and helped construct the building to put it in. The Mondo track was used by USA Track and Field and the Georgia Dome for the national indoor championships. The building is the Idaho Sports Center located in the Idaho Center complex in Nampa, Idaho. The track was purchased with a $250,000 cash gift from John Jackson, President of Jacksons Food Stores in Meridian, Idaho. Boise State has hosted several major meets, including six WAC Indoor Championships. The facility hosted its first national meet in 2005 with the USA Indoor Master’s Championships. Boise State has submitted bids to host future NCAA Indoor National Championships.

Outside the collegiate world, Maynard has coached a World Champion, five different Olympians, a Pan American gold medalist, five USA Track and Field Champions and three American Junior Champions. One of Maynard’s former athletes Tony Washington (1990-96), won the World Championship in the discus in 1999. Washington also won the gold medal in the discus at the 1991 Pan American Games along with five USA National Championships.

Maynard is currently an Executive Committee member of the United States Track Coaches Association and the NCAA Division I Track and Field Executive Committee. Maynard was also the head coach for the USA Track and Field team in its dual meet against Germany in 1996. He has served USA Track and Field as the Regional Decathlon Chairman, the United States Olympic Committee as an Elite Throws Clinician, and has been the lead throws clinician for the USA/Visa Decathlon team.

Maynard resides in Valencia with his wife, Dee. He has a daughter named Allison and a son named Michael.
