CRCA announces All-Region and National Scholar-Athlete Awards

Los Angeles - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has announced its sixth annual All-Region and National Scholar-Athlete awards. UCLA junior Monica Grova is both a CRCA All-West Region First Team selection and a CRCA West Region National Scholar-Athlete. UCLA's Kristin Bixel, Jessica Rogers, Emina Ong, and Irene Condella are also named CRCA West Region National Scholar-Athletes.

Grova, from Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz HS), is a two-year co-captain and three-year letterwinner. She is also a 2003 CRCA West Region National Scholar-Athlete and a Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selection, as well as UCLA's Most Valuable Novice in 2002. Grova has been integral in the varsity eight the past two seasons and rowed the five seat in UCLA's 2004 Pac-10 Grand Final appearance. She also recorded the Bruins' fastest erg score this season and has been named to the Director's Honor Roll every quarter at UCLA.

Bixel, a junior from Modesto (Johansen HS), has rowed in the varsity eight throughout the season, including the two seat at Pac-10's. She is a two-year letterwinner and member of the 2003 Pac-10 Novice Eight Championship team. Bixel, a walk-on last season, has been named to the Director's Honor Roll every quarter as a student-athlete at UCLA.

Rogers, a junior from Norco (Santiago HS), has stroked the varsity eight for the past two seasons. She is a three-year letterwinner and a two-time CRCA West Region All-Academic selection. Rogers has also received Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team honors in 2003. She has been named to the Director's Honor Roll every quarter at UCLA.

Ong, a junior from San Diego (University of San Diego HS), has coxed the varsity eight for the past two seasons. She is a three-year letterwinner and two-time CRCA West Region All-Academic selection. She has received Pac-10 All-Academic First Team accolades in 2003, as well as the program's Bruin's Scholar-Athlete distinction. Ong has been named to the Director's Honor Roll every quarter at UCLA.

Condella, a senior from San Diego (Mt. Carmel HS), is a three-year varsity letterwinner and three-time CRCA West Region All-Academic selection. In 2002, she was a Pac-10 All-Conference selection and was named the team's Most Valuable Oarswoman. Condella, a two-year co-captain, is a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selection and has been named to the Director's Honor Roll every quarter as a student-athlete at UCLA.

The All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. The nomination criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in at least 75% of the season's races in the varsity boat, and the student-athlete's Head Coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA. A maximum of four athletes plus one coxswain per institution may be nominated.

The All-Region teams were selected as follows: Teams with Varsity 8 boats that were ranked in the top 6 regionally as of the final NCAA Regional Ranking had athletes automatically distributed to the All-Region teams. At-large selections (for rowers from teams that have Varsity Eight boats which finished outside the top 6 regionally) were chosen by the Division I Awards committee based on boat performance, 2K erg score and coaches comments. Coxswains were also selected by the Division I awards committee based on boat performance and coaches comments.

The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. The criteria includes meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, participating in at least 75% of the season's races in the varsity boat, the student-athlete's Head Coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA, and the student-athlete must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA through the fall semester of the current season.

For the 2004 season, 124 Division I student-athletes received the National Scholar-Athlete Award.
