George Dickerson was the recipient of the award for spirit and scholarship in 1936, and the Bruins' award for the most outstanding offensive player in the UCLA-USC game is now named after him. He served in the Navy from 1942-1946. Returning to UCLA, Dickerson was the freshman football head coach for 4 years (1946-1949), varsity assistant coach for 7 years (1950-1956), and was the senior assistant in 1957. After Red Sanders' untimely death in 1958, Dickerson became the head coach for the first 3 games in the 1958 season, going 1-2 before being replaced by Bill Barnes.
