MALIBU, Calif. - Junior two-meter man Sean Kern tallied a game-high total of five goals, as No. 2 ranked UCLA overpowered No. 8 ranked Pepperdine by a final score of 13-6 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game played on Saturday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu.
Junior driver Brian Brown, junior holeman Dave Parker and junior driver Adam Wright each scored two goals for the Bruins.
UCLA, 12-2 overall, remained perfect in MPSF play, improving to 5-0 in league action. Pepperdine fell to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Sophomore driver Greg Lonzo scored two goals to pace the Pepperdine offense.
Pepperdine held a 3-2 lead following the first quarter of play, but UCLA took command of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Waves by a 4-0 margin with Kern scoring twice in the final 41 seconds to help the Bruins build a 6-3 halftime advantage.
The Waves' pulled within a 6-4 count on a goal by freshman holeman Michael Hausmann with 5:57 to play in the third quarter, but Kern answered with two more goals, helping UCLA extend its lead to 8-4.
UCLA sealed the victory by scoring four consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter.
The Bruins return to Westwood tomorrow, Oct. 24, to face Pacific for a noon MPSF match at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
