
Top-Ranked UCLA Defeats UC Irvine, 7-3

IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 1-ranked UCLA broke away from a 3-2 halftime lead and defeated No. 10 UC Irvine, 7-3, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo at Anteater Pool in Irvine Saturday.
The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on extra-man goals by Brian Brown at 6:28 and Matt Armato at 4:53. UCI's John Dorfi cut the margin to 2-1 with 1:23 remaining in the first period.
Jeff Pflueger gave UCLA a 3-1 lead with 1:40 left in the second quarter and the Anteaters' Tony Grosso scored 17 seconds later for a 3-2 UCLA margin at the half.
Armato scored his second goal of the day with 4:33 left in the third quarter and Adam Wright scored an extra-man goal with 3:36 left as UCLA led 5-2 heading into the final period.
Pflueger scored an extra-man goal with 5:17 remaining in the game, Dorfi countered for UCI at 2:52, then Sean Kern scored the game's final goal with 2:23 left for the 7-3 Bruin victory.
UCLA, which is tied for the nation's top spot with Stanford, improved to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the MPSF, while UCI fell to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
