LOS ANGELES - The CS Northridge Matadors defefeated UCLA 10-4 in front of 426 lively fans at Matador Field. The Matadors (11-9) broke a 4-4 tie with a six-run seventh inning that featured back-to-back homeruns by junior Dan Phillips and senior 2b Kevin Patrick. The Bruins (8-11) took a 4-3 lead on sophomore 2b Chase Utley's two-run shot over the left-center field wall. Utley, who hit 15 homers as a freshman last year and is the leading returning longball hitter, hit his fifth of the season, a team high.
Sophomore rhp Chad Cislak made his first start and only his fourth appearance of the season for UCLA, pitching a solid 4.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. Cislak has been held out of the rotation so far this season to work on a more efficient delivery. However, he is expected to rejoin the regular rotation either against Cal (Feb. 26-28) or USC (Mar. 5-7).
Team batting average leader sophomore 1b Garrett Atkins was 3-for-5 with three singles and two runs scored.
Under Head Coach Gary Adams, the Bruins are 14-17-1 versus CS Northridge. The two-game series concludes on April 11 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Next up for the Bruins is a three-game set with inter-university and conference rival California (6-9). On Friday, February 26 at 3pm, Bruin sophomore rhp Jon Brandt (3-1, 2.25) will face Golden Bear junior rhp Jon Shirley (1-1, 1.32). Over his last two starts, Brandt has pitched 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings while striking out 23 batters. On Saturday the 27th at 1:00pm, UCLA plans to throw freshman rhp Josh Karp (1-1, 4.82) against Ryan Atkinson (1-2, 5.06) of Cal. Karp is coming off an impressive outing against Loyola Marymount on Feb. 19, pitching five consecutive scoreless innings, including three 1-2-3 innings, one walk, and six strikeouts. Finally, the Golden Bears will throw sophomore lhp Jason Dennis (1-3, 5.93) while the Bruins will counter with a starter to be named in the Sunday matinee beginning at 1:00pm. Possibilities include Cislak (0-1, 3.46), sophomore lhp Bobby Roe (1-2, 2.59), sophomore lhp Ryan Carter (0-4, 6.75), and redshirt sophomore Paul Diaz (2-0, 6.00). The series finale can be heard over the internet by accessing one of the two following websites: www.uclabruins.com or www.broadcast.com. This weekend's series will not count as Pacific Ten conference games and therefore will not be included in league standings. The Bruins and Bears will meet April 1-3 in Berkeley for the conference series. CS Northridge plays three with Loyola Marymount Feb. 26-28.
