Baseball Falls to Washington, 16-15

SEATTLE - Despite a four-home run, 11-RBI game from UCLA left fielder Bill Scott, the Washington baseball team held on to beat the Bruins, 16-15, Tuesday at Husky Ballpark to complete a three-game Pac-10 series sweep. The game was a continuation of Monday's scheduled contest, which was suspended due to rain in the second inning.
Scott, a sophomore from Granada Hills, Calif., set new Pac-10 records with his four home runs and 11 runs batted in. Both of the old marks (three HR and nine RBI) were formerly held by several individuals. Scott hit two grand slams, including one in the ninth to close the UW lead to one run, a two-run shot and a solo homer. He now has 13 home runs on the year.
Washington (15-8 overall, 4-2 Pac-10) won the game primarily thanks to a nine-run seventh inning that included a grand slam by senior designated hitter Bryan Williamson. UCLA fell to 15-20 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-10 with the loss.
The Huskies led 4-0 heading into Tuesday's action after having scored four runs in the first, prior to the rain suspension. Scott's third-inning grand slam tied the game and UCLA took a lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth. A three-run homer by UW senior Kevin Ticen put the Huskies back in front, 7-6 in the fifth before Scott's two-run shot in the sixth made it 8-7.
Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Huskies trailed 10-7, but took the lead on a two-run single by Dominic Woody before Bryan Williamson's grand slam and a solo homer from Kyle Woods made it 16-10.
Scott hit a solo homer in the eighth and came up with the bases loaded and none out in the ninth to hit his second slam of the afternoon. Washington ace Jeff Heaverlo, making his first relief appearance, came on after the home run and recorded three straight outs for his first career save. The Huskies used eight pitchers in all, with sophomore Matt Gardner (1-0) picking up the win. UCLA reliever Paul Diaz (2-2) suffered the loss.
The three UW victories marked the first time the Huskies have a swept a three-game series from a team from the state of California since 1911, when the UW beat California three straight.
