WESTWOOD, Calif. - Jason Green's ninth-inning, bases-loaded walk scored sophomore 2b Chase Utley to give UCLA an 11-10 victory over visiting Arizona State in the opening game of a three-game weekend series at Jackie Robinson Stadium Friday evening.
Senior c Jason Green watched Chad Pennington's 3-2 pitch land high and inside as the Sun Devils, (32-13, 8-5 Pac-10) ranked 14th nationally, ended a four-game winning streak. With the win, UCLA (19-23, 3-7 Pac-10) has now won four out of it's last five.
ASU tied the game in the ninth on a two-out triple by pinch hitter Chip Gosewisch off the glove of a diving sophomore rf Nick Lyon. The ninth inning rally followed a Mitch Jones pinch hit three run home run in the sixth that previously helped the Sun Devils erase a five run deficit to tie the game.
The Bruins used doubles by sophomore lf Bill Scott and Green, a sacrifice fly by sophomore 1b Garrett Atkins, and an RBI ground-out by Lyon to take a 4-0 lead after one inning. Lyon had a career-high three RBI in the game.
Waldrip worked out of jam in the fourth, but after walking the lead off hitter in the fifth he gave way to Eric Doble who was greeted with a two-out line drive single by Lyon, scoring two and pushing UCLA to a 6-3 advantage.
Utley and Garrett Atkins drove in Bruin runs in the sixth to make it 8-3, UCLA's largest lead of the ballgame. Utley extended his hitting streak to eight games and raised his batting average over .300 (.301) for the first time this season with a 2-for-4 performance that included three runs and two RBI. Atkins also extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 1-for-4 outing that included two runs and two RBI.
The two schools will do battle again at Jackie Robinson Stadium tomorrow at 1pm. The Bruins will throw freshman rhp Josh Karp (4-3, 5.76) at ASU's senior rhp Chuck Crumpton (6-1, 3.69).
