California Tops UCLA, 10-9, in Overtime

BERKLEY, Calif. - The No. 4 ranked University of California women's water polo team (13-4, 4-2 MPSF) upset No. 3 ranked UCLA (9-7, 2-3), in overtime Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex on the Cal campus.
The Bears had trailed the Bruins 3-0 before scoring their first goal of the match with 2:16 left in the first quarter on a shot by sophomore Beth Irwin. Cal was then able to tie the match, 3-3 on a goal by sophomore Amy Buehler with 18 seconds left in the first period and a goal by Irwin with 4:26 left in the first half. But, UCLA then went on another 3-0 run to end the opening half with a 6-3 lead.
The Bears battled back again, outscoring the Bruins, 2-0, in the third period to get within 6-5. In the fourth quarter, Cal was able to outscore UCLA, 3-2, and Irwin made a goal with 2:03 left in regulation to send the contest to overtime.
The Bears struck first in the first three minute overtime period when junior Colette Glinkowski fired in a goal with 1:20 left in the period. Cal was finally able to get a two-point lead when freshman Breena Fleener scored with 28 seconds left in the second overtime period. UCLA was able to get within one goal when Elaine Zivich scored her fourth goal of the match as time expired.
Leading scorers for the Bears were Irwin and Glinkowski, with three apiece. Besides Zivich's four goals, Jenny Lamb had two goals for the Bruins. Both Cal goalie Evi Schueller and UCLA's goalie Erin Golaboski had fine matches with seven saves apiece.
UCLA has defeated Cal in the finals of the National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship the past three seasons.
