  • UCLA sophomore Robin Beauregard led the U.S. to an 8-8 tie with Canada, scoring twice in the final rally as the U.S. came back from three goals down with two minutes to play. Beauregard's third goal of the game came with four-tenths of a second to play. Bruin senior Coralie Simmons netted two goals, and Nicolle Payne (1995-1998) made eight saves in goal.

  • Dot Richardson (1981-1983) and Jennifer Brundage (1992-1995) hit home runs as the U.S. no-hit Canada, 6-0, in its opening game.

  • Jenny Johnson Jordan (1992-1995)/Annett (Buckner) Davis (1991-1994) defeated Annette Huygen Tholen/Sarah Straton of Australia, 15-13, in the first round of play, while Holly McPeak (1990)/Misty May defeated Martina Hudcova/Tereza Toblasova of the Czech Republic, 15-5.

  • Steve McCain (1993-1994) qualified for the all-around finals after placing 36th in the preliminaries with a totalof 55.686. McCain helped the U.S. qualify for the team finals with a fourth place showing in prelims.

  • UCLA head coach Guy Baker guided the U.S. women's team to a 6-4 win over World Cup champion Netherlands in the Americans' first ever official Olympic game. Bruin sophomore Robin Beauregard scored a fourth quarter goal for the U.S.

  • Pete Vagenas (1996-1999), Frankie Hejduk (1992-1994) and Brad Friedel (1990-1992) played all 90 minutes and helped the U.S. team earn a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic.

    Baseball

  • Tom Jacquez (1995-97) made his major league debut on Saturday evening in New York against the Mets. He was brought into the game in the bottom of the 7th-inning with the Phillies up 3-1 to face Robin Ventura and he got him to ground out to first. Then Jacquez struck out former UCLA Bruin Todd Zeile (1984-86) looking before being removed from the game. Jacquez threw six pitches, five for strikes, earning a hold.

  • Chase Utley (1998-2000) was named as the Philadelphia Phillies' minor league player of the month for August. Also, Garrett Atkins (1998-2000) was named as the Colorado Rockies' minor league player of the month for August.

  • Pete Vagenas (1996-1999) recorded an assist as the U.S. Olympic team defeated the San Diego Flash, 2-0. All four Bruins on the Olympic team - Vagenas, Sasha Victorine (1996-1999), Frankie Hejduk (1992-1994) and Brad Friedel (1990-1992) started for the U.S.

    Basketball

  • Natalie Williams (1991-1994) came off the bench to tally 21 points and nine rebounds in a 75-59 victory over the French Women's National Team in Australia. The victory was the team's third win in four days, and the sixth of their pre-Olympic tour.

  • Cade McNown (1995-1998) ran for his first career touchdown and totaled 10 rushes for 87 yards. In the air, he was 27 of 41 for 290 yards and two touchdowns.
