IRVINE, Calif. ---
Senior Tony Grosso scored the game-winning goal with 59 seconds remaining in the first three-minute overtime period and No. 5 UC Irvine went on to upset top-ranked UCLA, 9-7, in the season opener for both teams at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine Saturday afternoon. UCI junior Jeff Powers scored the last of his four goals on a penalty shot with two seconds remaining in the second overtime period to close out the scoring. Grosso had two goals for UCI, while senior goalie Dan Hipp recorded 13 saves, including three in overtime.UCLA, the defending NCAA champion, scored two goals late in regulation to send the game into overtime. Senior Brian Brown drew the Bruins within 7-6 at 2:01 in the fourth quarter, then senior Adam Wright tied the game on a goal with 18 seconds left after a steal by Brown, who led UCLA with four goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Brandon Brooks recorded six saves in goal for the Bruins.
UC Irvine returns to action Sunday hosting UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at noon. UCLA is back in action next Friday hosting Princeton.
