LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Juniors Bill Scott and Chase Utley each slugged two-run home runs to lead the 2000 UCLA baseball team over the alumni team 4-0 in a five-inning contest at Jackie Robinson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jon Brandt started on the mound for this year's squad and looked impressive against a lineup of former Bruins now playing professionally. In four innings pitched, Brandt allowed just three hits and no runs. Junior right-hander Tyler Dersom relieved Brandt in the fifth inning and retired all three batters he faced, including striking out former Bruin Benny Craig.
After Utley was hit by a pitch from alumni starter Pete Zamora to lead off the bottom of the first inning and junior Garrett Atkins struck out looking, Scott launched a home run to straightaway center field to put the 2000 squad on the board. Utley hit another two-run homer after a walk to junior Nick Lyon in the second inning.
Zamora, currently playing in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, pitched two innings and allowed four runs on three hits. Earlier in the afternoon, Zamora won the home run hitting contest with four long balls, edging Troy Glaus of the Anaheim Angels who slugged three. UCLA's all-time home run leader Eric Valent (69 HR) had a quiet bat in the home run derby. A 1998 first-round draft pick by the Phillies, Valent only connected for a home run once.
Between the home run contest and the 2000 Bruins vs. the Pros game, former UCLA baseball players over 30 squared off against each other in the "Old-Timers" game. In between innings, Bruin head coach Gary Adams introduced the six Hall of Fame inductees for 2000. Jim Colletto, Tim Doerr, Vern Followell, Sid Gilmore, Mike Magnante and Gary Robson were honored for the contributions to the UCLA baseball program.
UCLA will open the 2000 season on the road with a three-game series at Hawaii, Feb. 3-5. The Bruins and Rainbows will square off Thursday and Friday at 8:35 p.m. and Saturday at 5:05 Pacific time. UCLA's home opener will be Wednesday, Feb. 9 vs. UC Santa Barbara with a 3 p.m. start time at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
