HONOLULU - UCLA's 11-game winning streak came to a halt on Sunday afternoon in Hawaii, as Hofstra defeated the Bruins by a 10-5 margin. With the loss, the Bruins were eliminated from championship play in the Chevron Paradise Softball Classic, and fall to 11-1 on the young season.
Starting pitcher Courtney Dale struggled in her 2-2/3 innings pitched, allowing 10 earned runs before being relieved by Amanda Freed. Freed held the line from there, striking out four of the 13 batters she faced in her 3-1/3 innings of work.
The Bruins were the designated visiting team despite holding the top seed in championship play, and opened the game in the top of the first inning, when Freed walked, stole second, and eventually scored on an Julie Marshall RBI single to left field. Unfortunately, the Pride followed with a four-run bottom of the first and a six-run third inning to take a 10-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Bruins closed the gap by scoring two additional runs on an RBI double by Toria Auelua and a sacrifice fly by Natasha Watley. UCLA closed out their scoring with back-to-back solo home runs by Julie Adams and Dale in the top of the seventh inning.
The top-ranked Bruins return to action on Thursday, Feb. 17 when they face off against Sacramento State at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in Poway, Calif. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
