FULLERTON, Calif. -- Jake Epstein hit a pair of home runs including a grand slam and Craig Patterson added another grand slam Tuesday night to lead No. 3-ranked Cal State Fullerton to a 17-5 victory over the UCLA Bruins.
Epstein, making only his second start of the season at first base, put the Titans ahead to stay with a 3-run homer in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. His two-out grand slam in the sixth stretched Fullerton's lead to 11-3. The homers give him the team lead with three. Patterson's first home run of the year capped a 6-run seventh inning.
Fullerton's victory was its sixth in a row and improved its record to 8-5. UCLA has lost five in a row and nine out of 10 to fall to 7-10.
Six Titan pitchers combined to strikeout 19 Bruin batters. Jon Smith fanned 7 in his three innings of work and ran his record to 3-1. Mike Nunez struck out six in 1.2 innings with one Bruin reaching base on a wild pitch.
Bobby Roe started for UCLA and took the loss to fall to 1-2. He allowed the first seven runs in his four innings of work. Jim Hemming had a two-run pinch-hit double.
The Bruins look to get well at home, as they open a 10-game homestand tomorrow with San Diego at 1 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
