Indianapolis, IN - In one of the most physical and intense games of the 2000 Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships thus far, the No. 2 seed UCLA Bruins defeated No. 3 seed California 5-3 Saturday at the IU Natatorium.
In a game which featured almost 20 ejections and a player from each side fouling out, sophomore All-American Elaine Zivich anchored the win for the Bruins after scoring four of UCLA's five goals.
UCLA got off to a rocky start, falling behind 2-0 in the first quarter, but managed to fall within one at the half after Zivich blasted in two second-quarter goals.
In the second half, UCLA held Cal scoreless while scoring three goals of its own. Two minutes into the third quarter, freshman Jessica Lopez tied up the score at 3-3. Just minutes after, Zivich's third goal put UCLA ahead, 4-3, for the first time in the game. In the fourth quarter, Zivich put the finishing touch on the victory when she scored on a penalty shot after Cal's Colette Glinkowski was called for a foul.
UCLA's defense was led by freshman goalkeeper Jaime Hipp, who pulled down nine saves. Cal keeper Fana Fuqua also had an impressive game, grabbing seven saves.
The Bruins will contend for their fourth national title when they battle defending national champion No. 4 seed USC, who upset top-ranked and top-seeded Stanford 10-5 Saturday, at the IU Natatorium Sunday at 1:30 pm Pacific time. Following the Championship Match, the Awards Presentation will begin at 2:30 pm.
