BERKELEY, CA - UCLA (7-2, 2-0 MPSF) came into today's game having already defeated California (5-5, 0-1 MPSF) twice this season. The Bruins beat California, 6-4, at the NorCal Tournament and 6-2 at the UCSB Tournament. By the end of the afternoon the Bruins would extend their season record to 3-0 over California, defeating the Golden Bears, 7-5, in their home opener at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bruins started the game off with a goal from junior Kelly Heuchan on the first possession of the first quarter, after having a 6 on 5 advantage. Two minutes later California junior Brenna Fleener responded with a high skip shot at 4:04 left in the first. Senior Heather Petri put the Bears up 2-1, scoring on a 6 on 5 advantage with 56 seconds left in the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, UCLA tied the game at 2-2 on their first possession with a goal from sophomore Robin Beauregard, after having a 6 on 5 advantage. Senior Kristin Guerin then scored with 33 seconds left in the half, putting the Bruins up 3-2 at the end of the first half.
On their first possession of the third quarter, California freshman Erika Lorenz scored on a quick backhand and Cal took the lead with 3:23 left in the third on a goal from senior Julie Arnold. Fleener added another goal with 2:36 in the third, putting the Bears up 5-3. Senior Coralie Simmons brought the Bruins back to within one, scoring with 53 seconds left in the third after having a 6 on 5 advantage.
UCLA started the fourth quarter with a goal at 6:32 on their first possession, tying the game, 5-5, on a counter attack from Kelly Heuchan. With 4:58 to go, UCLA scored again on an outside shot from freshman Thalia Munro. The Bruins put the game out of reach when they scored again with 28 seconds left in the game, on Heuchan's third goal of the afternoon, giving UCLA the game 7-5.
