UCLA Baseball Stumbles Versus Kansas State, 13-12 and 11-7

Kansas State got a two-out, bases-clearing double from shortstop Osmar Castillo in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game and a one-out, base-clearing double from second baseman J.D. Loudabarger in game two, as the Wildcats completed the three-game sweep of UCLA with a pair of come-from-behind wins on Sunday afternoon at Frank Myers Field. The Wildcats won the continuation of Saturday's postponed game, 13-12, before earning an 11-7 victory in game two.
With the doubleheader sweep, UCLA fell to 25-16 on the season.
With a record-crowd of 2,947 fans on hand for the start of the game on Saturday, Kansas State jumped on the board first with two runs on a pair of hits in the bottom of the second inning. The Wildcats added three runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two-run home run by senior outfielder Kasey Weishaar over the left field wall.
Down 5-0 after four innings, UCLA struck back for three runs in the fifth inning on four hits, including doubles by second baseman Josh Canales and outfielder Ben Francisco. The Bruins then took the lead for the first time in the seventh with four runs, highlighted by catcher Josh Arhart's three-run home run over the left field wall. Kansas State struck back with four runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh inning on just two hits, a pair two-RBI singles by outfielder Pat Maloney and first baseman Mark English. The Bruins responded with two runs on four hits in the eighth to tie it at 9-all then took the lead again with three runs in the ninth on two hits and an error.
After the game was called in the top of the ninth inning with two outs due to darkness, the two teams completed the game on Sunday. Kansas State led off the ninth with a double by Pat Maloney followed by an error on the third baseman that allowed Kasey Weishaar to advance to first base. After a strikeout and fly-out to center field, B.J. Crone singled home Maloney to close within 12-10 then Crone took advantage of an error by the Bruins' second baseman on a fielder's choice by Nick Sorensen that loaded the bases. Hitless on the game, shortstop Osmar Castillo took advantage of a strong wind to belt a double over the head of the left fielder allowing all three runs to score and giving the Wildcats an improbable 13-12 victory.
In game two of the doubleheader, UCLA jumped on the board first with one run on three hits in the first inning followed by a run on two hits by Kansas State in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at 1-all. The Wildcats took the lead with three runs in the third inning, highlighted by Pat Maloney's team-high seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field wall. UCLA closed within 4-3 with two runs in the fourth inning, but Kansas State again responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning. However, the Bruins continued to fight with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game at 7-all.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth, as outfielder Nick Sorensen doubled home Ty Soto from third base on a double down the left field line. After the Bruins intentionally walked Osmar Castillo to load the bases with one out, J.D. Loudabarger made the team pay with a three-RBI double to left-center field that cleared the bases and gave the Wildcats the final 11-7 victory.
