Women's Water Polo Falls to Stanford In MPSF Championship

Honolulu, HI - For the fourth time this seaon, the No. 2 Bruins were defeated by No. 1 Stanford, falling this time to the Cardinal in the MPSF Championship, 8-5. With the victory, Stanford (26-0) earns an automatic berth to the inagural NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship, which they will host, May 12-13. The Bruins (16-4) will likely gain the sole at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.
Stanford scored the first goal of the game and used a 4-0 run in the second and third quarters to pull away. Coralie Simmons scored three goals for UCLA, while Kelly Heuchan and Maureen Flanagan each hit the back of the net once. Stanford's Brenda Villa and Ellen Estes combined for five goals and tournament MVP Jackie Frank had 10 saves in goal for the Cardinal.
In the third place game, No. 3 USC (28-4) beat No.4 California (17-9) by a score of 11-8.
Following the Championship match, the all-tournament teams were named. UCLA's senior captain Coralie Simmons and sophomore Robin Beauregard received first-team honors. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Hipp was named to the all-tournament second team.
