January 10, 2002 | Bruin Athletics
Jan. 10, 2002
UCLA has developed one of the most successful intercollegiate athletics programs nationally, with over 600 student-athletes in 22 sports regularly competing for national championships. Since 1950, UCLA has won 86 NCAA titles.
Intercollegiate Athletics complements the academic mission of UCLA by seeking to achieve excellence in the fields of men and women's sports. Intercollegiate Athletics aims to attract the highest quality student-athletes, coaches and staff, and to provide the resources to build nationally competitive athletic teams. In order to remain competitive on every front, UCLA has and will continue to commit to improving its facilities. The following projects* have and/or will directly affect our practice and competition venues.
Recently Completed Athletic Projects:
- Athletic Hall of Fame - an 8,000 square foot space dedicated to the display and exhibition of UCLA's great tradition of sports and athletes. Within the Hall of Fame, one will see the media wall which displays UCLA's competition venues combined with live and recorded athletic events, the Bruin Theatre, displays of every current sport, a Hall of Champions and a kid's interactive area. The Hall of Fame acts as the entryway to the J.D. Morgan Center, the athletic department offices.
- New Athletic Department Administration Building - 70,000 square foot project combining new construction and renovation. The completed building provides private office space for coaches and staff in a sport suite atmosphere. The addition of conference rooms and a learning center for student-athletes greatly expanded the ability to provide our student
- athletes with the best academic resources.
- PGA Golf Facility a pitch and putt practice facility was built on the west edge of campus to provide an on campus practice site for our golf teams to work on their short game.
- Drake Stadium/Marshall Field the old conventional oval 400-meter track was dismantled and replaced with a "flat-back" 400-meter track with a polymer surface. The "infield" of the track provides for discus, javelin and hammer events to be run from two different directions, dependent on wind conditions. Within the track is also a natural grass surface that is the home field for our soccer team competitions.
- Easton Softball Stadium - an entire rebuild of the infield and outfield along with new fences, scoreboard, dugouts and bullpens upgraded our softball playing facility. In addition, a clubhouse/office and locker facility was built with adjoining public restroom facilities and a snack bar.
- North Athletic Field - a soccer practice field built over a two level parking structure that provides seating for 1,000 and a scoreboard for competitions. This field also provides a quality site for lacrosse, rugby club and intramural sporting events.
Current Athletic Projects:

Acosta Training Center - Acosta Training Center- this project due to start in February of 2002 will renovate and expand the current UCLA Athletic Training Facility. The current (32,500 square foot) facility houses the football team, sports medicine, weight training and the women's lockers. The project will demolishes the "south wing" of the existing building and add a new two-level structure that will house the football facilities (the new "Knapp Building") on one floor and a varsity locker room (housing men's, women's and coaches lockers/showers) on the second floor. The new north wing will double the size of the current weight room on the basement level and add a new 10,000 square foot sport medicine facility on the first level, featuring a rehab pool. The new building is planned to be about 70,000 square feet when completed in December of 2003.
- Jackie Robinson Baseball Facility - a front entry renovation project will begin this summer which will provide a new brick entry with tribute to the stadium's namesake as well as past players that have competed for UCLA.
* all athletic projects are funded by the department's operating income or donated/fundraised money. Projects that are "future" may be waiting for final planning or project funding. If you are interested in participating in any of the projects noted, please contact the UCLA Athletics Development Office at (310) 825-8699.
Current Campus Projects:
- Men's Gym - a renovation project of the entire building will upgrade the basketball and volleyball training facility within the gym. New floors, baskets and a more efficient floor layout will restore a practice site for many of our teams.
- Women's Gym (Current Dance Building to be Named Kaufman Hall) - this building is being transformed into a performing arts center for the campus. Included in this project is the renovation of the existing pool that provides an auxiliary practice site for our swim team.
