Speaker's Committee Examining Effects of Title IX To Be Held At UCLA This Wednesday

Nandi Pryce and Jill Oakes of the UCLA women's soccer team, as well as Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women's Administrator Betsy Stephenson, will join committee co-chairs Assembly Speaker Herb J. Wesson (D-Los Angeles/Culver City), Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), Assemblymember Jenny Oropeza (D-Long Beach) and Assemblymember Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) at a hearing this month to examine opportunities for women of color in sports and academics.
Nicky McCrimmon of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks will be among the women athletes and other experts who will testify at the first hearing of Speaker Wesson's Select Committee on Title IX October 16 at UCLA's James West Alumni Center beginning at 10 a.m.
"The existence of Title IX guarantees that every woman athlete in California is treated fairly, on the field or in the classroom," Speaker Wesson said. "This committee will look at opportunities for women of color to see that Title IX is living up to its promise."
"Through testimony of experts in the areas of academics and sports, our committee hopes to build on the strengths of Title IX," said Assemblymember Steinberg.
Stephenson; Anita DeFrantz, Vice President of the International Olympic Committee; Dr. Rita Cameron Wedding, California Commission on the Status of Women; and Dr. Carol Otis, a physician of women's sports medicine will also take part in the hearing.
The Select Committee was formed to examine how California universities, colleges, public schools and local sports organizations comply with the 1972 education mandate to prevent discrimination in academics and athletics.
