Bruins Fall In 15th Inning To Cal, 10-6

Los Angeles -- Fielding errors once again proved costly as the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) baseball team fell 7-2 to UCLA at George Page Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Lions (2-3) committed four fielding errors against the Bruins (5-3), leading to three unearned runs and extending two other innings that proved damaging . The biggest came in the Bruins half of the sixth inning as the Lions errored on a potential double play. Following the error the Bruins would score three runs to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. The Lions could never recover as Bruin starter Casey Janssen went six innings, allowing no earned runs on just six hits to improve his record to 2-0 on the season.

UCLA would strike first in the top of the second when Wes Whisler would hit a one out double. He would advance to third on an error by starter Joshua Muecke and then score on Kevin Conlin's single to left.

LMU would anwser with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Anthony Santana would start the inning reaching on an error and advance to third on Sean Smith's double. Santana would score on Billy Lockin's single and Smith would score on a single by Kris Zacuto.

Lockin would finish the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and catcher Jonathan Higashi would get a hit, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Joshua Whitesell also finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

The Bruins would break the game open in the sixth when Josh Arhart would start the inning with a single to left. Muecke would then get Adam Berry to hit a grounder to short for a potential double play. However, the Lions failed to turn the double play to put two runners on base with no outs. Casey Grzecka would hit an RBI double to score Arhart and Wes Whisler would hit a single to right to score Berry. Conlin would finish the inning with an RBI single to score Grzecka.

Bruin reliever Doug Silva would keep the Lions in check, allowing just two hits in the final three innings to secure the win. UCLA would tack on two more unearned runs in the seventh and then an insurance run in the ninth on a home run by Berry. The home run cleared the left field wall, the Mikos Blue Monster. It was the first to be hit over the 37-foot wall that was installed at Page Stadium this summer.
