No. 3 UCLA Defeats No. 1 USC, 9-8

In the opening game of the Stanford Invitational, held February 9-10 in Stanford, CA, the no.1 UCLA Bruins defeated UMass 14-2. The leading scorer of the game was attacker Jessica Lopez, who recorded three goals. Scoring a pair of goals for the Bruins were Kelly Heuchan, Mari Joyce and Thalia Munro. Also scoring UCLA goals were Kristyn Pulver, Maureen Flanagan, Jody Schmidt and Amber Stachowski. Pulver led the Bruins with three steals in the game. And, junior goalkeeper Jaime Hipp recorded eight saves.

In the second game, the Bruins defeated the Cal Golden Bears 5-4. Senior playmaker Heuchan led UCLA with three goals and three steals. Lopez and Amber Stachowski each had three steals in the game. Hipp recorded six saves.

The Bruins are now 3-0 overall (1-0 MPSF). Tomorrow, UCLA will face San Jose State in the Stanford Invitational at 9:00 AM. The championship game will be played at 5:00 PM.
