Bruins Sweep Santa Clara

Redwood Shores, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team competed at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif., today. The Bruins defeated the Santa Clara Broncos, but the Stanford Varsity Lightweight 8 upset the UCLA Second Novice crew.
In Varsity action, the Bruin Varsity 8 and Santa Clara crew were about even at 500m into the race, with the Bruin JV boat about 11-seconds behind. At the halfway point, the Bruin Varsity 8 built a 3-second advantage over Santa Clara. They extended their lead and won the race by a 10-second differential, posting a time of 7:41.64. Santa Clara finished second at 7:51.75, and the Bruin JV 8 rounded the Varsity competition at 8:14.50.
In Novice competition, the UCLA First Novice crew battled the Santa Clara Novices in one of the Bruins' closest races of the season. Santa Clara took an early 3-second advantage until the halfway point, but the Bruins were making a move. The Bruin Novices caught a few crabs and edged the buoy line during the first 1000m, but they exhibited the consistency they have shown throughout season with 2-minute splits in the last two 500 meters. With 500m to go, the Bruins took a marginal lead of 0.32-seconds, and in the final sprint, the Bruins (7:49.52) rowed to victory, 3-seconds ahead of the Broncos (7:52.86).
In a late addition for today's events, the Bruin Second Novice 8 competed against the Stanford Varsity Lightweight 8. There were no official results, but the Cardinal defeated the Bruins by about a 10-second differential.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, April 27, at the Miller Cup, hosted by UCLA in Marina del Rey, Calif. The competition is expected to endure all day.
