What a way to end the day! On Sunday February 23 the fifth and final "I'm Going To College" event this school year, the Women's Gymnastics team ended the program with Jamie Dantzscher earning a 10.0 with her floor routine on the last event of the day. Pauley Pavilion was filled with over 4,000 excited Elementary, Middle and High school students that were eager to cheer on the Bruins. Each of the young Bruin fans received a coupon for a free Pizookie, compliments of BJ's Pizza and Grill thanks to Dantzscher's 10.0!
Students spent their morning exploring the college fair area that was set up outside of Pauley Pavilion. The L.A. City Fire Station set up two extended size fire engines for the students to examine. Among the organizations that helped to make the event a success were the University Police Department, LAUSD Police Department and UCLA Early Academic outreach.
Besides getting a tour of the police and fire vehicles, the students received all sorts of souvenirs including, stickers, posters and buttons. UCLA student-athletes such as Football and Women's Diving and Men's and Women's Volleyball autographed posters for excited students. Students were also given the opportunity to show some Bruin spirit by getting their face painted with Bruin paw prints.
However, the highlight for the students was attending the Women's Gymnastics meet where the No. 1 ranked Bruins defeated the Arizona Wildcats. Thousands of students sat in the stands and cheered while the Bruins soared during the competition, and showed everyone why they are the best gymnastics team in the nation.
Thanks to the efforts of many students, athletes, and volunteers, the "I'm Going to College" event is held numerous times throughout the year. It provides students with the opportunity to learn the benefits of attending college and witnessing the excitement of Division I Athletics. The "I'm Going to College program will be back again in the fall with Football.
