Fifth-Ranked Bruins Split Matches at Nor Cal Tournament

The fifth-ranked Bruins (6-4) split its matches during the first day of the Nor Cal Tournament at Stanford. UCLA defeated UCSB, 9-7 in the first game before falling to defending national champion Stanford, 7-4.

After being deadlocked at 1-1 after one period and down 2-1 early in the second period, the Cardinal scored three times to take a 4-2 halftime lead. The Bruins pulled to within one goal with 1:08 in the third period on a goal by Peter Belden, but fourth period goals by Thomas Hopkins at 4:20 and Peter Varellas at 2:20 pushed the Cardinal to a comfortable lead and the win.

The Bruins and Gauchos played a close match in the morning session, as the teams were tied up at 6-6 in the third quarter. However, Brett Ormsby scored twice to put UCLA ahead 8-6. Ian Christensen brought the Gauchos to within one goal with 6:12 remaining in the match, but Michael March gave the Bruins an insurance goal with 3:30 in the game.

UCLA will be back in action tomorrow when its faces off with Long Beach State at 9:10 am in Stanford.
