Bruin Decathlete Chris Staton Heads to Pac-10 Multi-Events

On April 14-15, Bruin senior Chris Staton and volunteer assistant coach Casey Thom competed at the Mt. SAC Relays and California Invitational Decathlons. Staton finished fourth at the California Invitational and Thom was sixth at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Staton scored a personal best and NCAA provisional 7,052 points at the California Invitational Decathlon, hosted by Azusa Pacific. In the first day of competition, he scored a personal best 3,587 points. In the 100m, he ran 11.42 (769 points) and jumped a personal best 22-5.75 (6.85m, 778 points) in the long jump. Staton threw 39-4 (11.99m, 606 points) in the shot put. He cleared 6-2.75 (1.90m, 714 points) in the high jump. And, he ran a personal best 52.10 (720 points) in the 400m.

On the second day of competition, Staton scored 3,465 points. In the 110m hurdles, he ran 15.26 (818 points). He threw a personal best 133-8 (40.75m, 680 points) in the discus. In the pole vault, he cleared a personal best 14-9 (4.50m, 760 points). In the javelin, he threw 169-6 (51.67m, 613 points). And, in the 1500m, he ran a personal best 4:54.17 (594 points).

Former Bruin decathlete Octavius Gillespie, now competing for Guatemala, won the California Invitational Decathlon with 7,264 points. It is a Guatemalan record.

At the Mt. SAC Relays Decathlon, Thom placed sixth, scoring 6,948 points. On the first day, he scored 3,763 points. In the 100m, he ran 11.39 (776 points). In the long jump, he jumped 22-9.25 (6.94m, 799 points). He threw 40-8.75 (12.41m, 631 points) in the shot put. In the high jump, he cleared 6-4.75 (1.95m, 758 points). And, in the 400m, he finished in 50.35 (799 points).

On the second day of competition, Thom scored 3,185 points. In the 110m hurdles, he ran 18.69 (460 points). In the discus, he threw 128-5 (39.15m, 647 points). Thom cleared 14-1.25 (4.30m, 702 points) in the pole vault. He threw 167-3 (50.99m, 603 points) in the javelin. And, he ran 4:25.78 (773 points) in the 1,500m.
