The UCLA Athletic Department held its sixth annual "Big Dance" at Pauley Pavilion June 2. Student-athletes from all 22 of UCLA's intercollegiate athletic teams were on hand for the Superhero-themed event, which featured a Supershot competition and karaoke/talent contest.
In the Supershot competition, which awards the three team members who can make a layup, free throw and three pointer the fastest, Amanda Blong (women's diving), Demetre Howard (men's track and field) and Jordan Farmar (men's basketball) took the title. Blong shot the layup, Howard hit the free throw, and Farmar was the three-point shooter.
Reclaiming the karaoke/talent competition was the women's basketball team, who won for the third time in five years. They performed to Ike and Tina Turner's "Proud Mary", with Nikki Blue singing Tina's parts and Sissy Pickett portraying Ike. Stephanetta Bingley, Lisa Willis, Noelle Quinn, Emma Tautolo, Ortal Oren, Amanda Livingston, Julia Pitts, Consuelo Lezcano and Shaina Zaidi provided backup. Also competing in the talent competition were singers Dianna Gooden of the women's track and field team, J.J. Hair of the football team and Michelle Glavan of the women's soccer team, who also played guitar. The women's soccer freshmen also performed a dance number.
Keith Carter (football), Jon Rankin (men's track & field) and Maribeth Buche (women's track & field) were each awarded the C.H.A.M.P.S. Inspirational Award, given annually to a male and female student-athlete who has overcome personal adversity, injury or illness while achieving athletic success.
The Big Dance was sponsored by the Bruin Athletic Council in conjunction with the UCLA Athletic Department.
