The UCLA men's tennis team began the 2006 season at a pair of tournaments on Thursday, as members of the team are split between the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

At the NCTC, Benjamin Kohlloeffel picked up a pair of victories on the opening day. He survived a tough first-round match against Kentucky's Bruno Agostinelli, eventually winning 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4. He followed that up with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Virginia's Darrin Cohen.

Also competing at the NCTC are Philipp Gruendler and Michael Look. Gruendler downed Mississippi's Juan Pablo DiCesare, 6-3, 6-3, and Virginia's Eric Riley, 6-4, 6-1 in the first and second rounds respectively. Look defeated Virginia's Nick Meythaler, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round before knocking off Arizona's Roger Matalonga, 6-3, 6-3.

A majority of the Bruin squad was competing at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup. Mathieu Dehaine, Jeremy Drean, Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol all picked up first-round victories, with Drean and Surapol advancing to the round of 16 later in the day.
