IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 7-6 decision to No. 1 USC, 7-6, Sunday afternoon in a SoCal Tournament semifinal match at UC Irvine. The Bruins rallied to within one goal after trailing the Trojans, 7-3, midway through the third quarter.
Sophomore Scott Davidson led UCLA with two goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded seven saves for the Bruins.
UCLA trailed 2-0 with 5:34 remaining in the first quarter, before getting on the board with a goal by Davidson at 4:23, cutting USC's lead in half. Senior Justin Johnson tied the contest, 2-2, on a goal from two meters out with one minute to play in the first period.
The Bruins (14-3) assumed their first and only lead of the game on a goal by sophomore Tyler Jemmett with 4:39 remaining in the second quarter.
USC (11-0) broke a 3-3 tie just 28 seconds after halftime on a goal by Shea Buckner. The Trojans added three more goals over the following 3:36 to assume a 7-3 advatange.
The Bruins held USC scoreless over the game's final 11:56 and used goals by Davidson, freshman Clay Jorth and junior Krsto Sbutega to inch within one goal.
USC's Adam Shilling recorded four goals in the cage.
UCLA will play No. 2 California on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the SoCal Tournament's third-place match. No. 3 Stanford defeated the Golden Bears in sudden-victory overtime to advance to the first-place match.
