Indoor freshman Rhonda Watkins (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Bishop Anstey) of the UCLA women's track and field team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Mar. 5-11.
Watkins, the reigning World Junior long jump champion, added another title on Mar. 9, winning the NCAA Indoor long jump title with an indoor lifetime-best mark of 21-6.75. The win gave her the first NCAA title and first All-America honor of her career and marked the first time since Keyon Soley in 2000 that a Bruin had won an NCAA indoor long jump title. Watkins, who is in her first season of indoor competition at UCLA, entered the meet tied for third in the nation with an indoor mark of 20-9, and her outdoor lifetime-best mark of 21-9.50 set Mar. 3 is one of the highest marks in the world so far this season and will rank her No. 1 when the collegiate outdoor rankings are released.
This is Watkins' first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
