Junior guard Arron Afflalo (Compton, CA/Centennial HS) of the UCLA men's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Mar. 19-25.
West Regional Tournament MVP Afflalo led the Bruins to their second-consecutive Final Four appearance last week by leading UCLA in scoring in both the West Regional Semifinal win over Pittsburgh and the West Regional Final victory over top-seeded Kansas. Against the Jayhawks, Afflalo scored a game-high 24 points (10-for-15 from the field) and added four rebounds and three assists. The Bruins improved to 5-0 all-time against Kansas in NCAA Tournament play. In the Bruins' Sweet 16 win over Head Coach Ben Howland's former team, the Pittsburgh Panthers, Afflalo again had a game-high in scoring (17 points) and added seven boards and two assists. Afflalo made all 10 of his free-throw attempts. Afflalo averaged 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last week to improve UCLA's overall record to 30-5. The Bruins have now won 30 or more games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Coach John Wooden's 1971-72 and 1972-73 squads both won back-to-back national titles with perfect 30-0 records.
This is Afflalo's second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and fifth of his career.
Also nominated: Cody Decker, Baseball; Emily Feher, W. Water Polo; Jodie Legaspi, Softball; Tasha Schwikert, Gymnastics.
