SAN DIEGO - Senior Courtney Mathewson scored a game-high four goals to lead the top-seeded UCLA women's water polo team past fifth-seeded Hawai'i, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at San Diego State's Aztec Aquaplex. The semifinal victory sends the Bruins (29-0) into the MPSF Tournament title match for the second consecutive season.
Trailing by three goals early in the first half, UCLA came back to defeat Hawai'i (20-9) and cruise into the championship match, where the Bruins will face third-seeded USC (19-6) on Sunday at 4:10 p.m.
Hawai'i held UCLA scoreless through the first 14 minutes, taking an early 3-0 lead. The Bruins rallied to tie the game with three goals before halftime. UCLA took its first lead of the afternoon on a goal from Mathewson at the 2:50 mark in the third quarter. Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the third quarter, as UCLA controlled a 6-5 advantage entering the final period.
UCLA scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to secure a spot in the MPSF Tournament's championship match. Bruin senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen notched eight saves.
Kelly Mason and Angela Turnbull each scored a pair of goals for the Rainbow Wahine. Serena Bredin netted six saves in the cage for Hawai'i.
