IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Krsto Sbutega scored a career-high five goals to lead the No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 7 UC Irvine, 10-4, in the season opener for both teams Saturday evening at Anteater Pool.
Sbutega scored three goals in the first two quarters to help UCLA assume a 5-1 halftime lead in the non-conference match. Junior Scott Davidson added a pair of goals for UCLA, and junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin collected 11 saves.
UC Irvine took the game's first lead, taking advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity, when sophomore Brandon Johnson found the back of the cage one minute into the contest. UCLA responded with six unanswered goals to take control of the game.
UCLA also received goals from junior Tyler Jemmett, sophomore Ben Hohl and freshman Cullen Hennessy, who netted his first collegiate goal for the Bruins.
UC Irvine's James Frank led the Anteaters with two goals, as Johnson and Jesse Hatch each added one goal.
UCLA returns to action next weekend at the NorCal Tournament, hosted by Pacific (Stockton, Calif.). The Bruins open tournament play against Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10:40 a.m.
