Men's Track & Field Has Solid Indoor Openers In Flagstaff And Seattle

The UCLA men's track and field team had a big opening weekend of the indoor season on Saturday as top performances were achieved in Flagstaff, AZ and Seattle, WA.
At the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, three Bruins achieved NCAA provisional marks - sophomores Bo Taylor and Nick Robinson in the shot put and senior Dustin DeLeo in the pole vault. DeLeo won the vault with a provisional mark of 17-00.75 as six Bruins placed in the top-10. Taylor threw over a two-foot lifetime-best in the shot put to place third overall with an NCAA mark of 59-9.50. Robinson, who redshirted the entire 2008 competition year, opened up with a provisional mark of 58-7.25 to finish fourth overall.
Taylor was second in the weight throw with a three-foot lifetime-best of 59-11 as he had quite a day in Flagstaff.
The Bruins also had event wins in the 400m, 4x400m relay and high jump. Senior Elijah Wells won the 400m in a time of 48.95 and then anchored the 4x400m team to victory in a time of 3:19.93. Sophomore Taylor Hobson won the high jump competition with an indoor lifetime-best jump of 6-9.75.
Freshman Steven Norton highlighted the 800m runners as he led a 2-3-4 finish by the Bruins with his second-place run of 1:54.65. Newcomer Karlton Rolle was ninth in the 60m, running 6.97.
In Seattle at the UW Preview, senior Kyle Shackleton was the top collegiate finisher (4th overall) in the 3000m with a lifetime-best run of 8:17.03. Drew Shackleton finished just behind his twin brother in fifth-place, also with a lifetime-best run of 8:17.53. Five Bruins finished in the top-10 of the 3000m on Saturday.
Sophomore Cory Primm missed an NCAA provisional mark in the 800m by .03 seconds as he finished second with a time of 1:50.53. In the mile, junior Marco Anzures was fourth overall and first in his heat in a time of 4:11.13.
The Bruins will next head back to Seattle for the UW Invitational January 30-31.
