Vanessa Zamarripa Named Pac-10 Gymnast Of The Week

Walnut Creek, CA - UCLA freshman Vanessa Zamarripa (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township HS) was named the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Zamarripa won her first collegiate all-around title in the Bruins' 196.375-193.675 dual meet win over Arizona on Sunday, scoring a career-high 39.4, which is the highest mark by a Pac-10 gymnast so far this season. Zamarripa, who was also selected the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week, tied or set career-highs on all four events. She tied for first place on vault (9.9), tied for second on bars (9.85), placed fourth on beam (9.825) and tied for fourth on floor (9.825). She now ranks fifth in the nation on vault with a season average of 9.9.
Zamarripa's performances led UCLA to a new season-high team total of 196.375, which bumped the team up to second in the national rankings with a season average of 196.225. The Bruins also hit season-bests on vault (49.2), beam (49.275) and floor (49.275).
Also receiving conference acclaim was Oregon State's Mandi Rodriguez, whose floor routine earned Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors.
The Gymnast of the Week nod is the first in Zamarripa's career and the 23rd all-time by a Bruin.
