LOS ANGELES - Trevor Bauer threw his second career complete-game one-hit shutout, leading the No. 24 UCLA baseball team past USC, 4-0, at Dedeaux Field on Saturday night. Bauer struck out 14 batters to become the school's career strikeout leader after having carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

Bauer (4-1) led UCLA to its 15th win in the last 19 meetings against the Trojans (8-15, 0-2 Pac-10), throwing his sixth career complete game. The native of Valencia, Calif., retired the first 19 batters before allowing a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh to James Roberts.

Adam Landecker bounced the Trojans' only base-hit of the evening up the middle with one out in the eighth inning. In all, Bauer allowed just three baserunners on two walks and one single. He notched nine strikeouts in the final four innings.

Bauer pushed his career strikeout total to 329, one ahead of Alex Sanchez's career total of 328 strikeouts (1985-1987). The junior right-hander's effort helped UCLA record its sixth shutout of the year, the most shutouts in one season for the Bruins since throwing nine in 1978.

At the plate, UCLA (11-7, 2-0 Pac-10) received at least one hit from each of its starters in the batting lineup. Cody Regis was the only Bruin to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Chris Giovinazzo went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI, and Dean Espy went 1-for-5 with the only extra-base hit (double) of the game and one run.

USC right-hander Austin Wood (1-4) absorbed the loss, surrendering four runs and nine hits in 6.2 innings. Wood struck out three batters and issued three walks.

The Bruins claimed a 3-0 lead with one double and three singles in the top of the fourth inning. Espy led off with a double down the left-field line, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Regis and scored on a single through the left side by Giovinazzo. Jeff Gelalich drew a walk after Giovinazzo stole second base. Consecutive RBI-singles by Pat Valaika and Steve Rodriguez scored Giovinazzo and Gelalich, respectively.

In the seventh inning, Tyler Rahmatulla led off with a single, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Regis' second base-hit of the game.

UCLA clinched a series victory in its first three-game Pac-10 series of the season and has won eight of its last nine games against USC at Dedeaux Field.

The Bruins and Trojans conclude their three-game series at USC on Sunday. Game time at Dedeaux Field is 1 p.m. Fans can listen to a live audio broadcast online, free of charge, at uclabruins.com.

Game Notes: Trevor Bauer previously threw a complete game one-hit shutout on April 18, 2009, in a 13-0 victory against Washington during his freshman campaign ... Bauer also moved up the school's career record list in wins - notching his 25th victory, Bauer is now tied for third place on the school's career wins list (tied with Jim Parque, two shy of Alex Sanchez's school-record 27 victories) ... Bauer has gone 2-0 with 28 strikeouts in 20.0 innings in three career appearances (two starts) against USC ... Bauer registered his 14th career outing with at least 10 strikeouts (seventh with at least 13 strikeouts) ... a victory on Saturday assured UCLA of no less than a split in the season series against USC - the Bruins have not lost the season series to USC since 2005, earning series victories in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 with a season split (2-2) in 2008 ... dating back to last season, UCLA has won its last eight Pac-10 road games and has won 12 of its last 14 Pac-10 road contests ... UCLA has thrown six shutouts through 18 games this season, keeping opponents to two runs or fewer in 13 games.
