Giovannoni Leads Men's Decathlon After Day 1 Of RJ/JJK Invite

Bruin sophomore Dominic Giovannoni stands in first-place after day one of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational Decathlon after posting two event wins on Thursday. Junior Trent Perez stands in third (3522), while sophomore David Thomas is fifth (3388).
Giovannoni started off the day with the fastest overall time in the 100m (11.30/795 pts.). In the second event of the day, the long jump, the sophomore also finished first with a mark of 22-6.25 (781 pts.). He was fifth overall in the shot put with a throw of 39-11.50 (617 pts.) and tied for second in the high jump with a clearance of 6-3.50 (731 pts.). Giovannoni concluded the day with the third-fastest 400m time (50.90) for 774 pts.
Perez was fifth in the 100m (11.57/738 pts.) and second overall in the long jump with a lifetime-best mark of 21-11.75 (743 pts.). He then finished eighth in the shot put with a lifetime-best throw of 33-8.50 (502 pts.). In the high jump, Perez cleared 6-2.25 to tie for fourth overall (705 pts.). He wrapped up the first day of competition with the fastest 400m time of the day, 49.59 (834 pts.). Perez's first day total of 3522 is a lifetime-best score for the first five events.
Thomas was eighth in the 100m with a lifetime-best of 11.78 (695 pts.) and was fifth overall in the long jump with a lifetime-best mark of 21-3.25 (693 pts.). Thomas then won the shot put with a lifetime-best throw of 42-2.75 (659 pts.). In the high jump, he tied for seventh with a clearance of 6-0 (653 pts.). He posted the fifth-fastest time in the 400m (52.85) for 688 pts.
Giovannoni, Perez and Thomas will compete in the final five events of the decathlon (110mH, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m) on Friday. The open section of the RJ/JJK Invite will also be held on Friday with the invite portion to follow on Saturday.
