Behind two conference championship performances by Cory Primm and Greg Woepse, the No. 21 Bruin men finished in a three-way tie for third at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, AZ. Oregon won the men's title with 129 points, while Arizona was second with 111. UC LA, ASU and USC each tallied 99 points during the meet.
Primm captured the first Pac-10 title of his career with a win in the 800m. Primm was running in the middle of the pack for most of the race. Oregon's Elijah Greer took the lead with about 200m to go and Primm went with him. The senior surged hard down the stretch and edged Greer by .13 seconds to pick up UCLA's first individual title of the meet. Prior to this year's Pac-10 championships, Primm's highest finish at the Pac-10s had been third in 2009 and 2008. With today's win, Primm becomes the first Bruin since Ben Aragon in 2004 to win an 800m conference title. In all, the Bruins have now won five conference crowns in the two lap event.
Senior Greg Woepse also had a huge night as he had what could be the biggest upset of the meet after winning the pole vault with a mark of 17-1.50. The odds-on-favorite was the NCAA leader from Washington, Scott Roth (18-9.25), but Roth failed to clear 17-1.50 and finished fourth overall. With today's win, Woepse captured the 14th conference crown by a Bruin in the pole vault. The last time a UCLA man won the vault was in 2008 when Bobby Talley won with a clearance of 17-1.
Also in the pole vault, senior Casey DiCesare and sophomore David Thomas tied for eighth with clearances of 16-3.50. That mark was a new lifetime-best for Thomas, who is a decathlete for the Bruins. Freshman Mike Woepse tied for 13th with a clearance of 15-3.75.
Just like his female counterpart, Ida Storm, freshman thrower Alec Faldermeyer stepped up in a big way in the hammer throw as he unleashed a lifetime-best by five feet to finish second in the event. He came into the meet with a top mark of 218-5 and then upped his PR to 223-9 in the first event on Saturday. Faldermeyer broke the freshman record with today's performance, which was previously held by Bruin All-American Boldizsar Kocsor (219-1). That mark will also move him into the top-10 in the NCAA this season.
The 4x100m relay team of R.J. Frasier, Karlton Rolle, Maxwell Dyce and Randall Carroll finished fourth with a season-best run of 39.63. They had won the two previous Pac-10 crowns. Carroll also finished sixth in the 100m, running 10.56. Dyce finished third in the 200m in a time of 20.94, while Rolle placed seventh in a time of 21.20. In the 4x400m relay, the foursome of Brian Law, Frasier, Primm and Dyce finished sixth with a season-best run of 3:11.59.
Law, competing in his first and last Pac-10 Championships, finished sixth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 51.99. He was just .04 seconds shy of his lifetime-best of 51.95, which he ran at the Texas Tri-Meet to win. Sophomore David Klarer placed eighth with a time of 52.96.
In the discus, senior Bo Taylor was third with a solid mark of 184-0, while freshman Matthew Kosecki was fifth with a big season-best of 176-5. Junior Thomas Nagengast was 10th with a mark of 163-6. Senior Jonathan Clark placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 52-1.75, missing first-place by .25 inches. Sophomore Dillon Stucky was ninth (48-10.75).
In the 1500m, senior Alex Crabill finished eighth in a time of 3:51.48. In the 5000m final, senior Jake Matthews was the top finisher for the Bruins as he placed 18t in a time of 14:47.81.
